The ban on the import and sale of e-cigarettes in Thailand gained substantial approval, primarily from parents of students, as a recent survey conducted by the Research Centre for Social and Business Development (SAB) revealed. The majority of respondents voiced concerns over potential health risks, urging the government to keep the prohibition in place.

 

The SAB unveiled these results during a seminar on Wednesday, where they presented their extensive survey findings to an audience of teachers and parents. The Deputy Director of SAB, Suriyan Boontae highlighted that out of 5,582 respondents from across the country, an overwhelming 91% backed the continuation of the e-cigarette ban, believing it would reduce young people’s exposure to smoking.

 

The study population primarily comprised 4,087 parents of students from upper primary schools to high schools. The remaining participants were school teachers and administrators. A significant 80% of those surveyed were aware of the detrimental health impacts of smoking e-cigarettes. An equal percentage perceived e-cigarettes as a potential gateway to illicit drug use.

Asst Professor Dr Vijj Kasemsap, Director of the Tobacco Control Research and Knowledge Management Centre (TRC), seized this opportunity to address the newly formed administration. He stressed the importance of a united front from the ministries of public health, commerce and finance, and their executives, along with the Consumer Protection Commission, to uphold the ban on the import and sale of e-cigarettes.

In the short term, some young people develop very serious lung problems as a result. And furthermore, vaping has become a HUGE problem amongst teenagers here in Australia.

What are the issues? Would you say vaping is worse than the smoking of regular cigarettes? Hard to get a definitive answer, but I thought vaping was far less damaging to health.. particularly wrt second hand smoke, which is how it impacts me.

Of course human lungs are not meant to breathe in anything but the atmosphere for which we are designed.

So why are so many voluntarily inhaling intoxicants of varying natures throughout history?

Because we are a creature of chemical reactions and altering the balances makes us feel good/different. 

As a species we've been doing that to ourselves for millennia in very inventive ways.

It's the motivation to do so and lack of control that is the problem. Alcohol, tobacco, coffee, sugar, or any drug of choice - handle your high.

 

The puritans can beat their drums loudly as is their want but it makes no difference.

I suspect that even if we lived in a utopia of some sort humans would still seek out ways to 'alter' the experience.

the human brain is still developing into the early 20's. cannabis use in teens does pose a large number of issues. 

As there is already a ban on e-cigarettes this sort of activity seems to be focused on both maintaining the current status quo, and also asking for additional controls, and more aggressive enforcement of the ban.

 

Anti-smoking groups, which are also anti-vaping, here are always pushing for more aggressive controls. They've even proposed limiting foreign visitors to one pack (vs. 10 now) as a duty-free allowance.

 

A few politicians have been pushing for normalization of vaping products here. And even Chuwit is pro-vaping. SO this push is to counteract those efforts.

 

I understand the need to protect those under 18, but allowing adults to make reasonable lifestyle choices, which do not impact others, is something I would favor. I am neither a smoker nor a vaper, but I'm not going to try and control or influence others.

 

And banning something really only encourages those under 18 to dabble.

Agreed, and if it's a choice between weed and nothing, obviously "nothing" is safer.  If it's a choice between vaping and nothing, "nothing" is safer. 

 

But if it's a choice between smoking and vaping and between weed or booze, weed and vaping are both safer.

 

I'd like to see the studies that look at the whole picture.  For example, weed related car crashes and alcohol related car crashes, added up.  Did they go up or down when weed was legalized?

 

As an example, I can 100% predict that car wrecks would increase if they banned scooters in Thailand.  No scooters, more cars, more car wrecks.  But the number of deaths would go down.

You know what, I don't smoke and I don't vape, and I rarely drink, and never get drunk. I am sick to death of things being banned. I want there freedom to do what I want as long as it doesn't harm others, not have a bunch of bigots telling make what I can and can't do.

If the govt would just tax e cigs, there would ne no issue. Of course vaping is safer than smoking but makes the tobacco no money

Now do a survey of adults about vaping,  Kids shouldn't be inhaling anything anyway, make it legal and tax it, and put an age limit on it. Why should adults suffer becoz of kids, as with the alcohol time buying times, if adults don't sell to kids then there is no problem? You can't stop people buying illegal stuff on FB etc. like Guns and here you never will.

Are e-cigarettes safe?

No. Even though scientists are still learning about e-cigarettes, they do not consider them safe.

Hazardous substances have been found in e-cigarette liquids and in the aerosol produced by e-cigarettes, including these known cancer-causing agents:

• formaldehyde
• acetaldehyde
• acrolein.

Some chemicals in e-cigarette aerosols can also cause DNA damage.

E-cigarettes do not produce the tar produced by conventional cigarettes which is the main cause of lung cancer. However, many scientists are concerned that using e-cigarettes could increase risk of lung disease, heart disease and cancer.

Research also shows:

• a strong association between the use of e-cigarettes by non-smoking youth and future smoking
• that many e-cigarette users appear to be continuing to use conventional tobacco products at the same time (dual users). However, this is not a safe way to improve heath. Dual users may be exposing themselves to even higher levels of toxicants compared to people who solely use conventional tobacco products.

It can be hard to assess the safety of e-cigarettes and liquids because:

• there are a wide variety of devices and liquids sold
• their labels are often incomplete or incorrect
• users can change the liquid they use in their e-cigarette and how the device operates
• many diseases (such as cancer) take a long time to develop.
