Trump breaks with McCarthy, pushing Republicans to shut down the government

The former president endorses the tactics of far-right GOP members, telling them to force a shutdown unless Democrats give them “EVERYTHING” in negotiations.

WASHINGTON — House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s attempts to avoid a government shutdown just became more complicated after former President Donald Trump stepped in to endorse the tactics of far-right House Republicans, who prefer to see a funding lapse than compromise with the Democratic-led Senate and White House.

Trump, the front-runner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination who backed McCarthy for speaker, made the comments in a post on his social media platform.

“The Republicans lost big on Debt Ceiling, got NOTHING, and now are worried that they will be BLAMED for the Budget Shutdown. Wrong!!! Whoever is President will be blamed,” Trump wrote in the post, adding: “UNLESS YOU GET EVERYTHING, SHUT IT DOWN! Close the Border, stop the Weaponization of ‘Justice,’ and End Election Interference.”

His remarks contradict the views of McCarthy and many House Republicans, who say a shutdown would be politically self-defeating and do more to hinder conservative goals. They note that shutdowns routinely fail to achieve their stated policy aims. In this case, far-right demands — to defund Trump's prosecutors, add provisions on immigration and cut spending below levels in a two-year budget agreement — have no chance of passing the Senate.

Asked about Trump’s comments on Monday, McCarthy responded: “I think we’re much stronger when we stay open. I don’t understand how not paying the troops and not paying our border agents ... what we’re trying to do is secure our border. That would be a part of funding the government, would be securing the border.”

A mess of the GOP’s own making.   They had two opportunities, three if you count his election defeat, to be rid of Trump, they chose to back him and now he’s eating them alive.   D

Trump sees a dysfunctional government as being in his favor, not least because a shutdown would delay his court dates.

Did nobody ever tell them the story of the Frog and the Scorpion?

Suck it up Republicans you earned all by yourselves.

He's like the bank robber in some small town whose Cousin Leroy is the mayor who will shut down the city government because that means he won't get prosecuted and can hightail it on down to T.J.

For crying out loud America!  How many times does 45 have to threaten payback to non-supportive media entities and individuals by vowing to shut them down or have them executed, for you to eventually notice these are the same tactics used by his mate Putin over the years.

He recently called Biden the 'Manchurian Candidate'.  Another case of severe projection?

Trump wants chaos. He doesn’t care about the hardships it’s going to be on regular working people he only thinks of one thing himself. He is the worst kind man to be president in the history of America.

Such a great current irony. The working middle class having the same interests being divided between those of us supporting Bernie’s approach and those supporting The Donald. So sad … look to the lifelong histories … which has consistently supported the working middle class?!

1 man can do all that ... ????

And yet he was already President for 4 years, and we're all still here...go figure.

Trump wants the govt to do what is expect of all of us to do, live within our means, and don't spend more than we have.

Call me crazy, but sounds like common sense to me.

No, I won’t call you crazy. And I also want to see government spending to be brought under better control by Congress in a responsible way. The current demand to shut down the government is not the responsible way.

As to Trump? President for four years and during his administration a Republican majority sponsored tax cut, primarily benefiting the wealthy and corporations while not cutting spending. The factual result of his administration? An increase in the national debt of trillions of dollars.

OK, absolutely we need to bring the costs of demands for government spending on the national treasury into alignment with tax income. I look to fund Social Security earned by the lifetime of labor of the working middle class by raising the cap on Social Security contributions from income earned. I support an absolute demand that there be no earning of millions without taxation (SCOTUS ruled that corporations are equal citizens with me … treat them equally, taxwise).

If Trump didn't have a vested interest he wouldn't give a rat's. He's never had an actual policy beyond what benefits him the most. He was born in the wrong country.

I recall a lot of campaign BS from Trump, but never do I recall his telling people to live within their means.

Yeah, go figure. Unfortunately for you, you do not seem to  figure out much. The balancing of the budget is only a slogan for the GOP to attack the Democrats when the Dems are in power .When the corporate fascists are in power they proceed to break all records in deficit spending by massive tax cuts for the super rich.Reagan ,Bush and at the very top of the pile, the orange one.

Common sense might work in your household, but not in science. Several Nobel laureates in economics have shown that deficit spending is often necessary to spur on a sluggish economy, as long as the spending is done at the grassroot level, and not at the top. Trickle down does not work in developed economies.

And now to the most foolish ,most naive, and in a way most dangerous assumptions in your 'common sense treatise".

Why are we still here after 4 years of Trump??

1)Trump is a moron.

2)It takes time for wannabe autocrats to dismantle the check and balances of democracies. Hitler tried several times(beer putsch in 1923),took him over 12 years to absolute power, and America of today is a stronger democracy than the Weimar Republic.

3)If Trump gets back into the WH,he will put totally incompetent lackeys in all offices, will bring back 'clean coal ' and other fossil fuels, will disassemble all windmills, because they kill the birds and mess up his beautiful hairdo, inject bleach into Covid patients.....

Unfortunately there are millions of Halfwits like you ,who believe the common sense propaganda of the fascists and might put this total clown back into the WH..,which shows that ignorance is not bliss. We live in very dangerous times because of fools like you.

Amazing people still think Reps & Dems ARE DIFFERENT.

If people took the time to actually read stuff rather than just be anti-Trump on everything, they would know the issue is sometimes about funding - the democrats and biden shamefully added funding of Ukraine on helping out recent Americans in distress. The Reps wanted it separated - the dems do not as they fear money for Ukraine will not get through. If I was Trump I would fully support a shut down until the dems removed connected funding

If people took the time to actually read stuff they'd realize that the majority of Democrats and Republicans in the House and the Senate are in favor of supporting Ukraine.

McCarthy won't put Ukraine aid to a separate vote because it would pass with majority support from both sides, but more Democrat votes than Republican.  That would make the Republicans look bad and cost McCarthy his job as Speaker.

They weren't much different till Gingrichwho initiated a sharp turn to the right.

Now Rep aren't a real political party anymore. They are a cult in the thralls of an egomaniac. It's a cuckoo 's  nest.

I'm wondering where that sentiment was hiding when Trump dumped the public purse into the savings accounts of the rich.

Stop giving billions away to foreign countries if you can't feed your own at home..

Do you give money to people you don't know, when you can't afford to feed your own family.

Common sense would be ... ????

Trump was elected by people that don't like Washington and probably would have been happy to see it shut down permanently.

He wasn't elected to be nice to swampy people.

A lot of people apparently have wet dreams about Trump being a failure. Sadly the failure seem to be the present guy in the W H. Obviously lost the plot on the southern border.

Trump apparently lives in a lot of poster's heads that post on here. They just can't stop talking about him, and anyone that doesn't hate him like they do is a halfwit and/ or a fascist .
