Your question is hard to answer because of insufficient background info. Generally, however, if you hold a work permit don't let it expire because applying for a new work permit is always a greater hassle in terms of documentation than extending an existing one.

Does renew mean just extend or will there be some changes (employer, kind of job, place of work etc.)?

What kind of visa do you hold (Non Immigrant B based on your work permit or a Non Immigrant O)?

If it comes to a work permit and Non Immigrant B all is surely about taxes. Possibly you may consider a "2 months paid holiday" (and continue to pay personal income tax) rather than stopping your work which might ease things quite a bit when it comes to work permit issues. Keep in mind once expired (even by just one day) you will have to go through an entire new work permit application process pretty much like you have never possessed a permit before.

Hope this is going to assist you do make the right decision in your particular case.

Good luck.

Richard
