The Economic Division of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports reported that the number of Chinese tourists in Thailand last week fell by 75,093 compared to the previous week.

The ministry said Thailand received 497,966 foreign tourists last week. This was 54,453 or 9.86% less than the previous week. The number of foreign tourists in the country decreased, especially Chinese tourists. This is probably because of the Golden Week Chinese holiday from October 1 to October 7.

The top five foreign tourist destinations in Thailand last week were Malaysia (down 20.43%), China (down 29.47%), India (down 8.22%), South Korea (down 26.77%) and Laos (down 1.16%).

The ministry predicted that a lot of Golden Week Chinese tourists left Thailand early to avoid the airport crowds, thus reducing the number of Chinese nationals in the country.

The ministry also admitted that the tragic shooting at the Siam Paragon shopping mall in Bangkok also played an important role in the decline of tourists. A Chinese woman lost her life in the incident, which also spread a feeling of insecurity among tourists from China.

Not just because of the shooting in Bangkok... Chinas manufacturing sector is slowly imploding..

Those made up the vast majority of travelers over the last 3 years.

The issue really is how many of these were cancelled booking or non-bookings. If they are cancellations it is connected to issues in thailand, if not, it is more likely to be financial issues in China. I seriously doubt even the chinese do not book weeks or months in advance.

Nothing to do with the shooting or did TAT asked the tourists who stayed away why they did not come???

I think its probably has more to do with the rate of exchange between the Baht and Yuan getting worse by the Day

Oh come on TAT,

It's really only 75,090.

3 couldn't come because they had their bail revoked.

The Chinese are pretty easily spooked aren't they? Good job they are not fighting a war. Snowflakes.

Reported post removed.

It's no mystery, there was the usual increase due to the Chinese holiday and the following week, i.e. now, it has returned to the pre-holiday level. The jury is out on future outlook due to economic factors and the favourable visa concessions granted, let's see the impact with the actual numbers for November and December as an indicator.

Seems a lot of people on here make the mistake of automatically assuming every news article concerning tourism is quoting the same original source, when exactly the opposite true. Everyone was criticising TAT on an article either yesterday or the day before, and the people quoted in the article had nothing to do with TAT.  I don't know why anyone would expect consistency of opinion from multiple different sources.

I think it's the case a lot of posters don't even read the content of original posts and just trot out their usual bias.

What a joke ?!!! Every country has crime. There is no crime in China ?!!! ????????????????

Only one shooting stoped 70,000 ? ????????

I bet there are other reasons.

There are so many other factors. The Chinese real estate market is dropping like a brick. Thailand is likely soon to follow. Less cash to spend, flights are more expensive, hotel prices are up, even though occupancy is down. Etc., etc.

I have a feeling their fears won’t be allayed by any stretch when the perp merely gets a slap on the wrist or when he tries to square up by shaving his head and donning an orange robe for a week or two.

TIT.

When do the4 schools open up for the Chinese students? At this time of year, maybe

that would also be a reason the tourist numbers are down, as well as it still being

a very rainy, rain season.  TAT could check several situations about the lower numbers, but did they?

Is school season back in Thailand as well? Just a curious question from me.
