Charter amendment: Thailand’s Move Forward Party seeks controversial rewrite

The Move Forward Party (MFP), Thailand’s principal opposition, is determined to push for a renewed charter amendment through a motion in Parliament on Wednesday. The motion, which is the first item on the debate agenda and is supported by the MFP and its spokesperson, Parit Wacharasindhu, has sparked concern among lawmakers due to the potential broad changes it could bring about.

Fears centre around the proposed amendments to the first and second chapters of the constitution. The first chapter outlines Thailand as a unified kingdom with a democratic regime, while the second chapter details the powers of the monarchy.

Adisorn Piengkes, a Pheu Thai Party MP for Si Sa Ket and the chief government whip confirmed yesterday that the motion adheres to the referendum law. He also stated that government coalition MPs will meet tomorrow to decide their stance.

The government is willing to hear what the MFP has to propose. Should the motion pass the House of Representatives, it will proceed to the Senate and then the Cabinet for approval.

If the MFP motion manages to pass the first stage, which IMO is unlikely, the appointed, un-elected and definitely unwanted senators, will certainly shoot it, down as their rice bowl will be broken if they allow it to pass.

They could of course wait until May  next year when the senate members' tenure officially ends. But I'm sure this unelected pro-military body will somehow find a way to extend their time milking the system.

All sections should be reviewed.. Nothing wrong with to update and make some changes, even in the sensitive ones.. To do this will show that the country don't stay with outdated laws, but because the whole world has changed a new refreshemnt is no harm. Traditions could be saved, however in a new updated model it would benefit the people involved, and the country

That is almost guaranteed, although they will probably be re-branded and re-imagined some time before their use by date.

Yeah, there is no way that the military and Elilte will give up their power.  The other question, though is can the Mickey Mouse Club stay in power that long?

The sneaky thing to do would be after negotiations put forward and agree to something that the PT could not refuse without Thaksin committing political suicide.

Then see how long the club stays in power.

Naive I know but just revive the 2007 Constitution.

We all know the whole show is corrupt and the corrupt will not change it. The people of Thailand mean nothing to these corrupt megalomanics.

But what if the are actually proposing to amend other parts of the constitution?
