BANGKOK, Nov 2 (TNA) – Thai Defence Minister Sutin Klungsang will form a team to negotiate with China to replace a submarine that the navy ordered in 2017 with a Chinese–made frigate.

The government’s decision to procure the frigate instead of submarine as the submarine could not be fitted with a German-made engine as Thailand had requested.

Mr. Sutin said he would convene a meeting to discuss the matter today.

And what happens when there is a problem with finding engines or whatever for the frigate? I thought that when a company breaks the contract, you are entitled to a full refund, no? Seems like the country needs as much money as it can get its hands on as Pheu Thai is intent on ruining the economy with its 10,000 baht handout.

Bow to the Emperor (Xi)! :jap:

By Thai Newsroom Reporters

THAILAND IS ANTICIPATING unofficial talks next week with China in bid to trade off a submarine already purchased by the Thai navy for a frigate, Defence Minister Suthin Khlangsang said today (Nov.2).

Thai high-level defence officials and their Chinese counterparts are expected to hold the unofficial talks over the proposed tradeoff at a Defence & Security 2023 fair scheduled between Nov. 6 and Nov. 9 at Muang Thong Thani exhibition and convention centre in Bangkok, Suthin said.

Then, a Thai delegation will be assigned to officially negotiate the tradeoff with China at a later date, according to the defence minister.

Thailand has already opted to not procure the Yuan-class S26T submarine due to lack of a German-made MTU396 engine to be installed aboard as earlier specified in the 13 billion baht purchase contract.

Why do they need a Frigate?

Just tell China the deal is off the table, the government could use the money to fund the 10,000 baht vote bribe.

Get a frigate and all the Thai submariners will need more training. But at least they will already be familiar with a ship that goes under.

What is a Frigate?   Isn't that a fancy name for a supply ship?

Typically it's a small, fast warship designed to protect other ships in the fleet.

Maybe they thought it was a freegate.

Why is this still in the news? just a rehash of the same old news we were told weeks ago, just let us know when and if a "Deal" is done and how many more billions it will cost than a Sub.

Early to bed

Early to rise

Makes a man

Healthy, wealthy and wise? 😏

Don't know why they need it except for training purposes, but a Frigate makes much more sense than a submarine considering the depth of most Thai sea water areas they will (might) patrol!

We don't want your junk sub. But, we're a bunch of overgrown boys with a big budget, who want to impress people with big toys that are very, very expensive. We don't really have a need for your boats but we like the idea of seeming like big important men. What can you sell us?

Why does the submarine need an engine?

Couldn't they just tie it up next to the aircraft carrier with no aircraft that goes nowhere, or warehouse it along with the blimps that don't hold their helium.

Why not exchange the sub for a fleet of chinese weather baroooms able to circumnavigate the globe carrying a ton of erectlonics, and base 'em on the as yet unused flattop?

Win-win-win!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I do wonder if the Chinese subs and/or frigate come with Chinese "technicians," who, after their initial deployment might become permanent. And that is what is going on, here.

Frigates are important. Frigates have engines (maybe.)

Frigates can float and also go beneath the waves (based on previous Thai naval experience) during a mild breeze.🙃🙃

Ah. To protect the aircraft (non) carrier. Got it.🙃🙃

Whoa.

Slow your roll there.

Jumping to "talks" before forming a committee?

Major faux pas.

Well it's been at least 60 years since a single Thai member of the Navy has piloted a submarine, so it's very likely correct what do you are speculating about.

Has anyone considered the ramifications of that? Has anyone stopped to think about maintenance, the cost of maintenance, the difficulty of maintenance.

I wonder how many aspects of the future of this fleet have been considered?

does Thailand knows how reliable Chinese submarines  are, maybe not, as China denies the accident never happened 555

Chinese technicians will lead to a permanent Chinese presence and eventually a Chinese manned port facility and naval base. Perfect match for the one they've already got in Cambodia. The Gulf of Thailand is becoming a Chinese lake.

"I'm sorry, you can't trade back your submarine."

"Why?"

"Because it doesn't have an engine."

"It doesn't have an engine because you never gave us an engine."

"Right. And that's why you can't trade it back. It has no engine."

"We..... can't...... wait...... what?"

"That's right."

"But rather than a submarine we can't use, we'd rather have a frigate we can use. Can we trade it for a frigate? You can then complete the submarine yourselves for your own use."

"We don't want that submarine. It doesn't have an engine."

"But what about a frigate?"

"A frigate, you say? You'd like to have a frigate?"

"Yes, we would!"

"Well........ we might have a frigate we could exchange for your submarine. We might be able to work that out."

"Really?"

"Yes, of course! We might be able to do this! The frigate is perfect except for one thing: It doesn't have a hull........"

Just like the South China Sea. The ambitions of the Chinese for expansion know no bounds. Just give it some time and all of this will be seen very very clearly. Xi and his CCP goons are up to no good.
