Thai Cabinet approves marriage equality bill. New options for marriage visa?

On November 22, Thailand’s Cabinet approved the draft marriage equality bill and resolved to table the bill in parliament during the next legislative session, which is set to open on December 12. In its announcement, the Cabinet also instructed the Council of State—legal specialists and scholars who provide legal opinions and advice to the government on matters related to law and legislation—to prepare to revise other laws to ensure equitable rights for couples of all genders.

The marriage equality bill, if enacted, would replace the terms “husband” and “wife” with the term “spouse” in Section 1448 of Thailand’s Civil and Commercial Code. This, in effect, would provide LGBTI+ couples equal access to the right to marriage, welfare, child adoption, healthcare consent, property co-management, inheritance, and access to spousal benefits of tax deductions and government pensions.

Will it finally be possible for a foreigner to marry a Thai ladyboy and get a marriage visa?

Will a foreign man marrying a Thai woman get the same rights as a foreign woman who marries a Thai man?

I would like to think so but not holding my breath.

If a foreign Woman marries a Thai Woman.

Or a foreign Man marries a Thai Man who has to show the money in the bank when applying for 12 month extensions?

If foreign woman marries Thai woman, she would need to put 400,000 baht into the bank to get the extension of stay. If foreign man marries a Thai man, then no money is should be required.

Where's the equality for singles?

Never understood why if your married with a family to support you need 400k in bank for visa, but if you're single without anyone to support but yourself you need to have twice the baht with 800k

The Wife will usually be contributing towards the household finances.

She does in my house anyway.

I am 'partnered' (in Oz, pre-gay marriage there) to my Thai b/f since 2013 and living here on OA since 2015. We will marru here once the law is changed (if ever! remember it will presumably not get through the Senate as currently constituted) just to strengthen both our positions inheritance-wise.

Not sure I understand what the advantages might be of moving to a marriage visa ...

IMO yes as far as assets etc., but I think they are talking about a civil marriage service, buy that I mean one that will not Take place at an Amphur, i.e. not for a marriage visa/extension purpose. But only time will tell.
