President-elect Donald Trump said on Tuesday he will direct the Department of Justice to “vigorously pursue the death penalty” after President Joe Biden on Monday commuted the death sentences of 37 federal inmates to life in prison.

 

“As soon as I am inaugurated, I will direct the Justice Department to vigorously pursue the death penalty to protect American families and children from violent rapists, murderers, and monsters.

 

We will be a Nation of Law and Order again!” Trump wrote on Truth Social, echoing his long-standing advocacy for use of the death penalty, which was part of his tough-on-crime rhetoric during the 2024 campaign.

 

After Biden’s commutation of most federal death row inmates – which Trump on Truth Social said “makes no sense” – there will be just three individuals in federal prison facing the death penalty when the president-elect takes office in January.

Trump apparently is drunk with power including the power of the state to murder.

I am against the death penalty, and always have been.....

a. Even if we abolish the death penalty....

That is an indisputable fact. It's the reason I'm against the death penalty. I've nothing against ridding the state of the cost of looking after the really bad criminals, but too many innocents have been put to death to want it to exist.

Lastly about your protected by life imprisonment comment...how about you put your money where you situational ethics are & donate your SS to help pay for the life incarcerations of these murderers?

Some would advocate that justice is better served taking the life from evil people.  SOme would advocate that the families of their victims find closure seeing the evil terminated.  It assures society that they will NEVER escape or be released into society again to perpetrate evil again. 

 

It might also deter others with evil intent from acting on their urges.  Yeah, I l know the debate rages as to the deterrent effect.  I don't think most psychos think that far ahead but if their execution was public their whimpering as the needle goes in removes any cool factor the killer had.  They might envision themself in a similar position if they act on evil urges and might control themselves.  No way to know for sure.

 

Lastly, why should society spend millions imprisoning a true scumbag for 40 years when a bullet and cheap grave are available?  Just a thought.

I have mixed feelings overall about HOW the death penalty is charged and prosecuted.  If there is undisputed PROOF of a heinous crime then I have no problem with it and doing it quickly not dragged out for 20 years.  That proof would need to be surviving potential victims/eye witnesses and video etc.

 

Unfortunately HOW it is applied is usually to poor people and people of color at an unequal rate.  So I respect your position. 

 

I am not against the death penalty for some people.  But it needs to be tightened up to make sure only the guilty are put to death.

Unbelievable the comments I am seeing in here from the Trump haters. Yet, so many of them would be saying to hang the Thai or foreigner in Thailand that commits a heinous act in Thailand resulting in the death of an innocent. Such double standards apply only because of their hate for Trump. 

If you kill someone then you should expect your life to be over as well. It is the worst act you can commit and unfortunately humans are the only animals that kill each other. 

You Trump haters commenting should be thinking how you would feel if someone killed your mother or daughter or wife. It is easy to comment as a keyboard warrior looking at things from a distance saying it is bad. Get yourself in the middle of it and then your opinion would quickly change. Death sentences are not handed out easily. It takes a lot to prove and then to issue a death sentence. It also takes many years to exhaust the methods of changing that ruling. Usually many appeals in courts. Showing that they actually deserve that sentencing.  Get off your high horses and put yourself in a perspective that the victims understand. Stop being the keyboard warriors commenting your double standards simply because you hate Trump.

You try your best to show Trump in a bad way for these things. But face it. The men were not put to death and had gotten released from exoneration. They would not have been put to death either because it takes almost 20 years in prison before a death sentence is given. Plenty of time for them to be exonerated or to fight with appeals in the courts. So your nice little Trump rhetoric has no bearing to this OP. 

When there is no doubt over the guilt of people committing horrible crimes, especially agaiinst children, the death sentence is appropriate.
