We’ve heard it all before of course.

Nevertheless, Thailand’s new national police chief has vowed to crack down on drunk drivers over the upcoming New Year holiday. Torsak Sukvimol says police officers around the country have been instructed to strictly enforce the law when dealing with drivers found to be over the limit.

Thai law stipulates that drivers under the age of 20, who have held a driving licence for less than two years, are considered intoxicated if they have a blood alcohol concentration of more than 20mg per 100ml of blood.

Déjà vu is the phenomenon of feeling as though one has lived through the present situation before.

Not sure what brought this to mind.

Different kind of police officers for sure. You have to instruct them to enforce the law!

Simple  way to cut accidents just get the people off the road who should not be on it the first place. That should cut the traffic by 50 % .

All that means is that the pay off is higher…..

Drunk driving / Riding, is the norm in Thailand.

They see no wrong in it. how do you change that attitude.

Amazing Thailand.

Wash rinse,  wash rinse, repeat cycle,  100 years and on.  :coffee1:

A few years ago I was pulled over at a road block - I would have been a bit over the limit.

"You drink?"

"Just some beer"

"You drink whisky?"

"No, just beer"

He waved me through.

Checkpoints are easily avoided as most locals know the areas and roads they will be located. Not just for drink driving, but also for speeding, helmet and licence checks.

In the last year or so they have set up a checkpoint on Beach Road Patong almost every night - smart, as there is no way to avoid it. Before that they used to operate on the second road back, which was easily circumvented.

Oh, dear.....expect lots of empty cars parked roadside, drivers taken to cop shop.

Exactly the same happened to me in Hua Hin. Stopped after a pool match where I had two beers, no problem, only whiskey is bad.

Why is there a limit on under 20's blood alcohol..............it is illegal to consume any alcohol under 20 years old here.....

Should be 365 days of the year.

Will they be able to get the highway patrol off their lazy butts to actually go out and patrol the highways and look for reckless drivers, or will they strictly depend on the roadblocks as a lazy approach to finding drunk drivers?

so they are lenient at other times are they

they need to booze test their own first. My missus held a class reunion at our place on boxing day night. 5 of her former classmates that attended are police officers. They all drove here separately, but god knows how 3 of them managed to do so as they were already smashed to the eyeballs when they arrived (all in uniform because they were still on duty) and between them they consumed another 4 bottles of Sang Som whisky, and then they drove back to their police stations.

If the cops won't obey the law, let alone enforce it, how on earth can the average Thai be expected to obey the law.

Oh yes, you're free to kill whoever you want the rest of the year.

Why don't those eager reporters hanging on to the police chief's every word ask him after the event (when another 700-odd people have died) " How did that crackdown go, then?". I know, that would be losing face.

Maybe someone else has said it already, but why aren't they tough on drunk drivers ALL the time?

Ludicrous. It's really an admission that they don't do their job outside of New Year.

7 years, I've never seen a cop in our village, let alone a tough one.

Lots of drunks though.  Plenty of drunk driving.  Never changes. Always a few killed or maimed on motorcycles during festive period.

Safer, if possible, to stay home.

According to a letter in BP today, deaths are running at 40 a day.  A tribute to the dedication disinterest shown by police all year round.

It is like the provisional licence, some countries use if one has only passed the driving test quite recently, some are even required to display plates to warn other drivers to keep clear. Thailand allows them to drive only a little bit drunk, and after gaining a few years experience, they can drive much more intoxicated.

Good here, innit🤔

getting tougher = more cash

the RTP is licking their lips in anticipation of filling their pockets

Don't worry, just smoke weed and ride instead. Seems to work for some tourists in Phuket nowadays. What could go wrong? Sigh.
