2024 Idiot's Guide to Non-O Retirement extension(w Mult-entry) @ Chiang Mai Immigration

Good post.

I just got my first retirement extension today from CNX IMO. Took me four attempts to get the correct "certificate" as BBL screwed up on the 12-months - need 12 months worth of statements plus ONE page highlighting the foreign money transfers of 65k monthly. Now I I knoww I'll get it better next time.

Well, I'll make sure BBL do better.

nglodnig - Thanks for the positive comments. 😁

My previous visa before this application was good for 13 months due to my application timing. The Immigration Officer was very helpful this go-around when he sent me back to the bank stating that I needed a Bank Account statement dated back to the Granted date of the previous visa which was pretty close to 13 months earlier. I thought they only needed a 1-year statement but I was proved incorrect!

Update: January 2025

I completed my latest 1-year extension at Chiang Mai Immigration with 22 days to spare. Most of that experience was the same as listed in last year's notes above, but I will add a few new notes here, mainly concerning the mandatory bank information needed:

  • I arrived just before 07:00 AM and basically had to knock on the window at the guard shack to get a queue number. This is the very first step EVERYONE must do when they arrive. Get a queue number at the shack with the x-ray walk-through machine. The shack is between the large Buddhist shrine and the coffee shop in the right side of the car park.
  • Volunteers show up between 08:00-08:30 so I went back to my hotel to eat breakfast. These volunteers do a pre-check of your paperwork so it is a good idea to get sorted before your queue number is called.
  • I discovered that in my situation that I needed to have a transaction listed in my bank book within the past 7 days. Even though I had updated my bank book the previous day, it did not have a relevant transaction listed. I had done a 100-baht transfer that morning in anticipation of this so I was not too unhappy when I had to head to the bank. The banks are all closed at Central Airport Mall so I hopped on a Grab motorbike and went to the Thapae Branch of Bangkok Bank. They updated my book and were kind enough to make a copy of that last page for my immigration needs. Do not forget to make a copy!
  • The previous day I had received a Letter of Guarantee from my branch in another province and I had ordered an official bank statement which I was told would arrive via email the next day. In anticipation of not receiving this in time I had downloaded the previous year's bank statement (beginning at date of previous visa extension application) and had the copies stamped at the local branch. These were accepted by Immigration and I was watching them when they checked off the stamps at the bottom of the papers.
  • I received my extension by 10:30 and was reminded that I had to go back to the guard shack to get another queue number in order to get my Multiple Re-Entry permit process going. I only had to wait 15 minutes or so before my number was called. I had the Permit and passport in hand by 11:30AM . I would call that a good day at Chiang Mai Immigration. Note: I would guess that I was done by noon due to the fact that I arrived very early for a queue number. If I had arrived later I probably would have had to come back after Immigration's obligatory lunch break from Noon-13:00.
  • Don't forget to get a copy or two of your NEW extension stamp as you will need it for your Re-entry Permit processing. Copy shop behind the building or across the street: 2 baht per page.
  • Good luck!

Would note a couple of minor points:

(1)  I really don't know if CM Immigration requires a very recent transaction in your passbook.  Because I read a couple+ years back that other immigration offices were requiring that, I've been depositing 100 baht into my "visa account" just in case.  But, Jbifl's post seems to say it's now required here in CM and that may be the case.

(2)  I was going to switch my "visa account" to Bangkok Bank a couple of years back until I read many posts about BB taking 1-5 days to get the one-year's bank statement from Bangkok; however, Siam Commercial Bank (at least the CM Thaphae office) does both at the same time and generally it takes about 15 minutes.  And SCB does stamp and sign each page of the one-year bank statement.  As usual, I get those documents and do the deposit thing the day before the retirement extension application. (one needs to make sure the deposit is made just prior to the bank doing their paperwork so your bankbook amount and bank letter amount are the same).

(3) It's been a year or so since I got a re-entry permit here but last time they wanted in addition to the usual paperwork a copy of my TM30 and a copy of my TM47 Receipt of Notification.  Never had to supply those before (but, since I take the proverbial kitchen sink with me, I was prepared).

(4)  I got my last retirement extension a month ago and, for whatever reason, they wanted a copy of every filled-out page of my passport, including Vietnam stamps.  Again, I was prepared as they asked for the same thing about 5 years ago.

(5)  Be prepared to be required to give them a photocopy of your original Non-O visa stamp (even if it's in a prior passport).  Occasionally, they'll ask for that (regardless if you provide a copy of the transfer of stamps information in your current passport).

I go to the Bangkok Bank office just a few KLMS from Korat immigration the morning of my application to immigration.

I get my one year statement inside of 10 minutes. I've done this 3 or 4 years now. They know exactly how to do it. No delays.

Bit confused. Others maintain that takes BBL up to a week to provide 12 month bank statement.

What little I know about Bangkok Bank's 3 services concerning 12-month bank statements:

  • An unofficial method is to order a statement from the BB app. This method is quick and easy. The unofficial statement arrives in 5-10 minutes via email. Customers can order the free statements in Thai or English. I ordered both. Note: This is the method I used as I did not get the official statement via a BB branch in time. I printed out these unofficial statements and had the pages stamped at a local branch. It worked at CM Immigration this go-around!
  • An official method is to go to a branch and order the same statement (basically) via email. This takes a minimum of 24 hours turn-around time.  I believe that Immigration will accept these without any further stamps. Note: I did not use this method as I had ordered the official email statement the previous morning, and yes, it did not arrive in time for me to get started at CM Immigration the next day.
  • Another official method is to order a hard copy statement and I believe this can take up to week.

I would just remind people that in any of these cases you need to order a statement that dates back to at least the ISSUANCE date of your present visa extension. In some case this might be more than 12 months previously, thus you need to head into a branch to get this completed. The app statement request only allows a customer to go back 12 months or less. I say less as I could only go back to 01 February and not mid-January where we are today. Luckily I had ordered a 12-month statement in December. I used both statements even though they overlapped. I hope that makes sense.

That should be what is required.

Banks should not be stamping statements you print off from banking app.

Nor should immigration accept them.

Suggest anyone using Bangkok Bank order bank statements from your bank.

In case of first extension, how many months should the bank statement be and starting from when?

Thanks

I don't know enough to answer.

For first extension based on retirement you should not need a bank statement.

If you opt for that then 3 months would be fine.

Immigration wants to see 800k seasoned for 2 months.

Your bank book and photocopies showing that should be sufficient.

Although it's somewhat Engrish, please check out Sections 5.1, 5.2, and 5.3 from image above.

Don't follow.

I was replying to someone asking about requirements for first extension based on retirement.

I specifically answered requirements for using money in bank method.

Not income method etc

I would add a preparation step to OP that says to check whether your country's embassy/consulate provides affidavits of income.  If they do then you don't have to prove funds in a Thai bank, it can be in your home country bank account.  For example Canadians can get affidavits of income at the Chiang Mai consulate for a small fee.  Just take proof of income to the consulate.  Statement of income works as proof and can be downloaded for free from Revenue Canada website.

Sorry I don't have information about that. My post was (originally) based upon the 800K option only. Good luck!
