Beer Bar owners get together to submit petition to Pattaya City about being charged for music licence fee by more than ten music companies. Each time they were threatened for big amount of money and not sure if it was paid to the right people.

On the 20 July 2007, a group of beer bar owners met with Mr. Ronagit Akasing, Deputy of Pattaya City, to submit a petition about the case of being charged with a big amount of money for music licence fee by more than ten music companies. The petition will be forwarded to Mr. Niran Watanasartsathorn, Pattaya Mayor to consider for the way out. Mr. Ronagit told bar owners.

For the moment, all of bar owners have to pay for music licence fee in a big amount, also be afraid of being caught of playing music with no licence. One of the bar owners said that he has had a beer bar for more than 4 years, and had only little problem from times to times. But lately, he has the big problem of having to pay a lot of money for the music licence, He also wonders about the one who collected music licence fee is a person from music companiesA or police. Each time he was threatened for big amount of money without giving any information about the music licence law.

100% correct, NO scam it’s the PRS ……From the UK no less

Even Radio stations have to pay the fees and it’s all to do with Customers (who can hear the music...or see the tv screen...yes it is TV's also) absolutely nothing to do with bar revenue…Disco’s pay a fortune

As crazy as this sounds Hair salons in the UK have to pay and show the PRS sticker in the window or they can be done for not displaying the sticker>>>?

Even up here in the sticks the 5 bars were raided 3 weeks ago. I won't go into detail but in one case it was an obvious setup with unknown patrons demanding that the Karioke TV be put on. Two minutes later the place is inundated with people taking photos and voiceing all sorts of threats. Even though the bar has a Karioke license the new management didn't want to and had never used it till then.

The bottom line was that all the managers were summonsed to the local police station, most didn't attend. I believe these people, who ever they were, were told to piss off and stop annoying the local sourse of tea money.

Beer Bar Association present letter of complaint to Deputy Mayor concerning Music Licensing.

The Beer Bar Association of Pattaya held a meeting at Pattaya City Hall chaired by Khun Ronagit, Deputy Mayor of Pattaya, to discuss problems with music licensing for beer bars. A letter of complaint was handed over to the Deputy Mayor which raised concerns relating to the high cost of music licenses which many bar owners think is excessive and the cost of the license should be relative to the turnover of the business. The Deputy Mayor promised that he would contact the music licensing companies and arrange a further meeting to discuss a possible reduction in license fees.

So you're saying that PRS are now operating in Thailand and sending people round to collect money. This is not how they operate in UK. They are an independant private company - have they done a deal to collect with the Thai govt/Sony MCOT or what?

Complaints of having to pay fees to 10+ different companies?

I assume that, if paid, the bar owner gets a receipt and other documentation from the company or companies to whom he/she has paid.

These should be submitted to a lawyer for investigation and if fraud is suspected, then all bar-owners should go to the local police. I am sure that they would be interested, as it must be eating into their own 'fees'.
