International driving license for Thai local licence

Recommended Posts

They may have both been correct.

There are two different International Driving Permits (IDP) that Thailand can issue. They were each established by different treaties. Some countries have ratified both treaties and some countries have only ratified one of them.

1949 Geneva Treaty - IDP valid for up to one year

1968 Vienna Treaty - IDP valid for up to three years

The IDP will not be valid past the expiration date of your Thai license hence the girl saying it would be valid until your Thai license expires in 2027. She would have been assuming you wanted the 1968 IDP.

The other girl may have assumed you wanted the 1949 IDP with the one year validity.

BTW the UK is the only English speaking country that ratified the 1968 Treaty.
