The Cabinet has endorsed a draft bill on the protection and support of indigenous ethnic peoples in Thailand, Culture Minister Sermsak Pongpanich said after the weekly cabinet meeting today.

The bill is has been drafted to accordwith the constitution, which clearly supports equal rights for all people. There are about 10 million indigenous ethnic people in Thailand, the minister said.

Studies conducted before drafting the bill show that there are several problems facing ethnic minorities in Thailand, including the lack of Thai nationality, which deprives them of the same rights as other Thais. The bill has been drafted to ensure that they receive the same protection as other Thais, he said.

Endorsing a bill and the bill becoming a law are two very different things.

I'd like to see if this bill comes to fruition.....

Interesting as "indigenous ethnic peoples" in Thailand describes perfectly the Malay Muslims in the former Kingdom of Patani.

"Muslims of the Malay race are the largest ethnic community of Muslims in the world" - Book review of "Malay Muslims: The History and Challenge of Resurgent Islam in Southeast Asia," by Robert Day McAmis.

The treatment of these peoples since Thailand's unilateral annexation of their kingdom might best be described as colonization. Since 2014 with the Thai military overthrow of Thailand's elected government, the former Muslim Kingdom has been under continuous military State of Emergency that limits Malay's rights under the Thailand constitution.

With recent (again) restart of peace talks between Muslim insurgency BRN, Malaysia and Thailand it will be interesting to see if this draft bill is stalled, amended to exclude Malay Muslims or otherwise altered to minimize its benefit to Malay Muslims.
