It's not supposed to be a 'free service'? It is a 'free service'. Just ask for a receipt. I first found this out 15 years ago at Korat IO. I asked the officer, Khun Arcade, after he'd finished transferring the stamps, how much for him, he  replied 'no charge, free service.

I did my second transfer a couple of years back at Buriram IO and I was asked for 400 Baht. I said 'no I'm not paying, it's a free service'. Office was full with other farang and I was told to sit back down. I did, but no sooner than I did I got called up and the transfer was done. No charge.

Don't forget a re-entry permit to keep your current extension alive before you leave the country.

Thank you.

My current extension will have expired by the time I return to Thailand.

BEFORE you need deal with ur immigration office, u need have some stuff transferred at the immigration that  issued the extension only from old to new
BUT IF ur extension in old passport will be expired and no re entry when u return, you dont need do anything

Interesting. Yes, new passport, and I won't be able to use the extension again. So, I guess, I will just turn up at the airport with both passports, perhaps going a bit earlier, just in case.

Arriving in another SE Asian country, will there be any issues, if I only have the 'exit stamp' from Thailand in my (new) passport?

I did exactly this at BKK upon departure with no hassles whatsoever. Yes they will

escort you to the desk but it only took 5 minutes. Much better then hassling with a separate trip to get stamps transferred.

Will I need a copy of the new passport?

just did it myself....get a form for transfer of data from old to new on the immigration wegsite. It is free to do this.  At the same time they will do like mine possibly - tm30 and 47 at the same time/  All no charge! and fairly quick at CM anyway.

He's leaving the country, so no need to fill

his passport with two pages of crap.

Had BOTH a Emergency ( USA - 1 year ) Passport and a New 10 Year Passport ( returned from US 5 days after Emergency Passport was issued ) issued in September. ( Passport was sent for renewal 8 weeks in advance of expire )

ALL necessary stamps were transfered from Emergency Passport to New Passport,

at no charge, at my IO to New Passport.. Re-entry permit stamp issued in New Passport at airport. I carried all 3 passports,  Extension and Re-entry paper receipts when I traveled internationally to be on safe side.

However, some immigration offices might charge you a modest fee; I paid 500 baht for the service, which is actually all right.

Update: tried to transfer extension to new passport at Chaengwattana, but was told: "Cannot". Reason is that it was issued in another province.

General rule of thumb is that stamps, visa information etc is transfered at immigration where they were issued.

Example my last passport renewal was some years back at CW.

The io at CW transferred non O details, etc.

Would not transfer my reentry permit. Reason....it was issued at DMK (airport).

"You need go there"

Not surprised by your post.

Well, okay. But I wouldn't be surprised if the Immigration office that originally issued the extension, said: "You don't live here anymore..." - Anyway, I'll just present both passports on my way out.

I'm not sure if this is correct, or maybe I misunderstand.

The passport that has your extension is supposed also to have the original visa stamp, even if that one is 15 years dated.

At least that is what happened when I renewed my passport 7 years ago

Interesting. That would explain why another office cannot transfer the extension stamp. So, technically, I should only get an exit stamp into my new passport when leaving by air.
