You are certainly not alone when it comes to caffeine "sensitivity". It is estimated that around 5 % (that's the figure I've been told) of the world population are slow metabolizers of caffeine, meaning that these individuals' bodies break down caffeine (much) more slowly. This leads to a more pronounced and longer-acting effect by caffeine in persons belonging to this group, and many of these people report symptoms of anxiety, nervousness, irritability, insomnia, etc etc after consuming caffeine-containing products.

Furthermore, people who are suffering from anxiety, insomnia, etc to begin with are often encouraged by doctors to avoid caffeine, as the substance is a stimulant that can make these symptoms even worse.

I myself can't stand caffeine. I get most of the symptoms listed above if I drink coffee for example (but I actually like the taste of coffee). If I drink a cup of coffee around lunch time, I can't sleep AT ALL during the following night (I kid you not). I have tried to drink coffee for longer periods of time, hoping that the bad effects would go away, but after a few weeks of nervousness and insomnia I have, not suprisingly, given up.

I think that many people who react to caffeine like you and me feel some kind of social pressure to drink coffee anyway, since it is such a common practice (I'm from Sweden, and Scandinavian countries top the world list when it comes to coffee drinking). I still feel awkward declining an offer of a cup or two, but I have found out that if I say that coffee upsets my stomach, nobody thinks that that sounds any strange.

Maybe we should form some kind of support group. :D

Actually the amount of caffeine in Thai energy drinks (typically 50 mg) is less than a cup of coffee(100 mg and up). The main ingredient giving the "kick" is the natural amino acid: Taurine - there is typically 1000 mg in a bottle of energy drink. (+strong vitamin B group).

It surely gives me a kick after 1-2 bottles (be it with vodka or not).

Cheers!

The 10 baht bottles here are so much stronger than the UK cans of the same. I once had 1.5 bottles in about an hour and the vein in my lower right eyelid visibly pumped so that looking from a distance in the mirror I could see my lower eyelid throbbing to the beat of my heart.

Then last night I had three vodka red bulls and within an hour, despite being very drunk on other stuff (black soda, beer..) I was unable to prevent my leg from twitching for about two hours. I am about 98KG more fat than muscle 6'2"

That's just what I was about to say. They're all limited to 50mg so they're a little bit more potent than coke , caffeine-wise. It's the taurine.

How many of us feel the benefit of drinking energy drinks like ‘Red Bull’? Personally I have tried many, many different brands of these energy drinks both here and in the UK, and feel nothing after drinking two or three bottles. I love the taste of the Thai M-150 and Red Bull, but sadly don’t feel at all invigorated by them. In the UK whilst playing squash I used to drink a couple of these in the hope they may give me a boost, but they never did. Likewise when I have drunk Vodka-Red Bull. I know many people that claim the benefits of these drinks and wonder if generally most people feel the same.

Caffeine has ever reducing benefits if used repeatedly and requires ever increasing doses to get the same effect. If you drink coffee regularly, red bull won't help you a bit. Limit your coffee intake to 2 or 3 times a week (once you've laid off it for few weeks to detox) and maybe you'll start to feel a buzz when drinking red bull.

If your body is low on energy it's better you find safer, more natural solutions. Trying to kill lethargy with drugs is not the way to go.

I would agree with you if you drink 3 or more cups a day. I drink one cup a day and every once in a while two cups a day. But I get an the desired effect every day. Have tested myself as I have a nice blend that is decaf and one that is not, and I can always tell (wired wise) when I am being given the decaf from my maid. Taste wise its the same. I am not trying to sell the concept that caffeine is a good thing to wake up to daily but it does work for me. I can do the same thing with paradise ice tea (no sugar or sweeteners) which I bring with me from the US and really only switch to coffee when I run out of my tea.

When I have to drive from BKK to Phuket (about 12 hours), I usually drink about 3 M-150s throughout the journey to keep me alert. It certainly works! Anymore than 3 and I start to shake :o

Simon

That is the primary benefit to society of these drinks. Can you imagine how bad the local truck drivers would be if they didn't drink this stuff to stay awake?

Only once did i touch the stuff (red bull), because i was desperate to stay awake to finish something important. I drank way too many cans and although I finished what i needed to, i was seriously buzzing. I felt like a walking zombie. Eyeballs hurt like hel_l, head was pounding, body ached, and was shaking like a leaf. NO idea what part was lack of sleep and what part was redbull, apart from the serious shakes, which i KNOW was the caffiene. Was impossible to get off to sleep properly, although shattered, and when i did i had awful nightmares. Horrible horrible stuff...at least in that quantity. Well, definately put me off for life anyway.

Almost identical to you eek, I'd tired of beer after about 18 nights on it in March this year in LOS so thought I'd have a night on Vodka and Redbull like back home

"No haabb led bull, haaab lipo same same"

After probably 7 or 10 throughout the evening I returned to my room and couldnt sleep properly for a couple of days, and when I did drift off within a few minutes I'd wake up having the most horrible nightmares, real scary stuff! Heard there extra stuff in lipo but not too sure if thats true or not?

Have gone without sleep across a whole weekend before in the UK (not drink induced) and was very similar, the shakes, hallucinating, sweats etc and that took best part of a week to recover from too :o

I prefer a good few lines of cocaine myself.

Sadly, similarly to caffeine, it has a diminished effect after consistent usage.

Red bull etc...

It's great for tourists, or those who really need a kick start.

Shouldn't be made a habit, though.

I'm referring more to a real buzz than just a lift to "normal" levels. If you lay off it a bit and start out again you'll know what I mean. I used to keep my coffee down to 3 a week just so I could have a real skip in my step heading off to the gym. I avoid it in the morning because I don't like having to use drugs to start out the day.
