Breaking - Yellow Line Monorail - No Service!

Was looking at the train passing by at Bangkapi a few days ago, thought everything was operational again.

Travelled from Srinakarin to Samrong on this last year (2023) and the ride was quite uncomfortable.

The Innovia Mororail system has been around for 40 years and recently a city in the US have signed a contract for it.

"Alstom wins €250m contract for Innovia monorail system in US

The contract has a duration of seven years, with an option for a further one year."

That is a pity, especially for those passengers who have started to rely on the service.

Whilst the trains are proven in service elsewhere, this is the first time a Thai company has constructed a monorail guideway system.

will be interesting to see what the actual problem is and whether it affects the Pink Line, using the same rolling stock/guideway system as well.

More falling debris...lucky no one has been injured or killed.

Earlier this year it was a wheel falling off. What a joke.

They did these on the cheap and quickly I think that they are proving that Thailand does not have a company that can do it.

conductor rail falls off, pink line had the same issue already last December, this time it didn't looks as catastrophic as it was the inside rail that broke off, and got caught in the walkway between the concrete guideways (rails) whereas the outside one broke off and fell to the street

clearly there are issue with the material of mounting hardware or how they're attached to the concrete, last time it happened they said they had 'inspected' the tracks but that it happened again means they'll need to replace whatever it is that fails for the whole length of the tracks of both lines

Twelve vehicles (nine automobiles and three motorcycles) were damaged by falling debris.

A train stalled between stations and passengers had to exit the train and walk along the viaduct to the nearest station.

It looks like a significant failure of that cable housing. I think this has happened before, maybe on the Pink Line?

Yeah, it's the power rail, same thing as fell off the Pink Line.

Bangkok’s MRT Yellow Line resumes limited service after disruption

The Metropolitan Rapid Transit’s (MRT) Yellow Line in Bangkok recommenced limited operations following a disruption caused by loose parts falling from the track. From today, March 29, the service will operate with a temporary 20% fare discount until full service resumes.

The incident yesterday prompted a collaborative investigation involving representatives from the Eastern Bangkok Monorail Co. Ltd. (EBM), the Transport Ministry, the Department of Rail Transport, and the Mass Rapid Transit Authority (MRTA). The Yellow Line, managed by EBM, operates between Lat Phrao and Samrong.

Preliminary findings indicate that a finger plate on the rail’s expansion joint was displaced as a passing train caused it and other debris to fall. This led to a disruption in the electrical systems of the rail between Kalatan (YL12) and Si Udom (YL16) stations, resulting in the service suspension on the 30.4km line.

In a statement today, EBM announced the service resumption with a revised train frequency to enable technicians to replace the damaged rail and equipment. While this work is ongoing, passengers will benefit from a 20% fare discount.

Just replacing the bit that fell off with a price reduction to entice won't fix it. How about installing safety barriers or netting along the whole length of the line so that the public won't be in direct line of fire of things that will inevitably fall off again in future?

According to other sources bits fell off (again) and damaged a car and a motorbike. Parts of the system were found scattered over the road below. I don't understand how the owners of this company and other big businesses get away with poor maintenance and dangerous installations. One day there will be a major incident where one of the trains details and falls to the ground

The design of the power supply system has been successfully used on other monorails in the world.

Maybe they need to be looking at the quality of installation onto the guideway, and its inspection and certification.

I hope it’s an isolated occurrence and there will be no more teething troubles.

But its not isolated is it? Things have fallen off onto cars below multiple times now. There is a fundamental flaw in the design and construction that needs addressing and it will take a long time.

The difference is building codes, inspections, standards, licensing, and more.  One country has few, the other country has many and they are enforced.

Wait until they have to evacuate trains in the dark, during heavy rain, with damaged electrical systems.

What could go wrong.

I think they've been lucky so far.

Maybe best to shut down both Yellow and Pink lines for an independent safety audit - could be done over Songkhran.

Or they could just buy more amulets.

The monorails in Brockway, Ogdenville and North Haverbrook, all had issues when they started operating too.

KL too. And KL has repeatedly had them over the last twenty years.

First place I'd look is to see if the money for construction was "diverted", and shonky products used instead of the proper ones. Swampy had a lot of problems due to shoddy products being used, but most of us know why that was.
