Thai farmers rally for debts suspension

12:21, July 26, 2007

More than 7,000 farmers gathered outside Thailand's Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives here on Thursday, demanding that the minister speed up decision-making to suspend their debts and support their products.

The demonstration started Thursday morning and caused serious traffic congestion near the area.

Charin Duangdara, a leader of the gathering, said the farmers have asked the government to help them who are suffering from loss due to low prices of agriculture products.

They have asked for suspension of their debts with the Agriculture Bank and for the government to buy their agriculture products at market prices.

However, the protesters said the ministry has earlier promised to consider their proposal, but it is yet to give them the answer. The debt-ridden farmers complained that they are yet to be met by any government representative.

Farmers continue rally to wait for government’s help

Friday 27 July 2007 02:09:57 PM (GMT+7:00)

Thousands of farmers continued their rally in front of the Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry Friday morning waiting for Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont to sign orders to have creditor financial institutions suspend a forced auction of their land plots put up as collateral for loans and to set up a joint committee to help them.

Charin Duangdara, advisor to the Farmers' Debt Network of Thailand, reiterated the farmers’ rally would continue until they saw the written orders signed by the premier under an agreement he made with the group on Thursday.
