Thai police recently made a major dent in the online gambling world by shutting down two illegal betting websites. The mission, known as ZERO BET, resulted in the confiscation of cash and luxury goods amounting nearly to 10 million baht (US$270,000) in cash, and goods valued at over 60 million baht (US$1.6 million).

The probes discovered that the criminal organizations dealing with these websites had a yearly financial turnover surpassing 1,250 million baht (US$33,600).

The police announced on May 1 at the Technology Crime Suppression Division in Mueang Thong Thani the results of their operation. The successful raid originated from a search warrant given by the Nonthaburi Provincial Court, targeting a four-story commercial building in Bang Kruai district, which was suspected of being a hub for online betting networks.

Two women, 34-year-old Chutima and 33-year-old Sumalee, were arrested during the raid. Police seized 9.2 million baht (US$250,000) in cash, luxury cars, motorcycles, mobile phones, and other valuable items.

Chutima admitted to managing the finances of the betting websites following the directions from her partner, Kanokphan. She was responsible for cash withdrawals from dummy accounts every three days and storing the money at her home. It would then be given to the owners and partners each month, earning profits of 9 to 10 million baht (US$270,000) per month or about 120 million baht (US$3.2 million) per year. Sumalee, Kanokphan’s sister, was also implicated in handling initial cash transactions.

Both women are now facing charges for promoting illegal gambling and money laundering. The investigators are handling the case in accordance with the law.

The second case pertains to the network ufa888x.info, which had over 100,000 members and annual transactions exceeding 250 million baht (US$6.7 million). Police issued 33 arrest warrants for individuals involved in the operation, and thus far five, including the website owner, system developers, financial managers, and dummy account owners have been arrested.

Luxury cars from Lamborghini, Volkswagen, and several BMW and Mercedes-Benz models, high-end accessories, computer equipment, mobile phones, bankbooks, and ATM cards, all worth over 50 million baht (US$1.34 million), were seized in connection with this case.

Lastly, police searched a company in the Suan Luang district of Bangkok offering web-based text messaging services, which was promoting online betting sites. Legal actions are now being taken against the owner of this company.
