Thailand Seeks 7.5 Billion Baht Boost from Film Productions

The Thai government has unveiled an ambitious plan to generate 7.5 billion baht this year by positioning Thailand as a leading destination for international film productions. This initiative was prominently promoted at the Cannes Film Festival in France, where the country’s achievements in attracting foreign film projects were showcased.

 

Permanent Secretary for Tourism and Sports, Arrun Boonchai, explained that various government departments have been working diligently to enhance Thailand’s film industry. This sector is seen as a strategic tool to bolster the tourism industry. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has also emphasised the role of cinema in cultural diplomacy and economic development.

 

Thailand's draw for filmmakers lies largely in its picturesque tourist spots, which have featured in numerous international films and TV series in recent years. To make the country even more appealing, Thailand offers financial incentives, including a cashback scheme on production costs that has recently increased from 15% to 20%.

 

 

These incentives have proven effective, with the economic value of the film industry in Thailand rising from approximately 3.1 billion baht in 2017 to about 6.7 billion baht last year. Arrun highlighted that beyond direct financial gains, the film industry brings broader economic benefits. These include job creation in related sectors and increased tourism in lesser-known locations.

 

Noteworthy productions filmed in Thailand include “The Meg 2,” “The Creator,” and the hit TV series “The White Lotus,” which stars Thai K-pop sensation Lalisa Manoban. The government aims that these successful productions will further elevate Thailand’s status as a premier film production hub, ultimately achieving the target of 7.5 billion baht.

By establishing itself as a top choice for international filmmakers, Thailand hopes to see continued growth in both the cultural and economic landscapes.
