June 9, at 03:00 rescue staff of Sawangporn Kuson Rayong Rescue Foundation received a report of a motorcycle crashing at speed, into the back of a pickup truck. The incident occurred on Soi Koh Phruat Road, behind Big C, Nam Khok Subdistrict, Rayong Province.

At the scene, a foreign man of unknown nationality, 30 - 40 years old, was found lying unconscious on the road and seriously injured, with a head wound and broken legs. The casualties helmet had fallen off during the crash.

The riders telephone was still on and open on GPS navigation app. Responders suspect he was using the telephone to navigate and did not see the parked pick up truck. Police are investigating further.

My two golden rules when riding. Phone under the seat and fasten my helmet strap properly.

If I do want to use the GPS to navigate, I use my bluetooth ear buds and follow the verbal instructions.

If I'm ever in an accident, my dedicated GPS will be on and my phone will be on Google Maps.  That doesn't mean I was looking at either one when the accident happened.  If the impact is severe, the phone and the GPS probably won't be in their mounts on the dashboard, either.  But that doesn't mean that either one was in my hands.  I have hands free speakers for the phone and never touch the GPS.  Of course, that's in my 4 wheeler since I'm not a scooter kind of guy.

I'd be curious whether the rider had a handlebar mount for the phone.  If not, and he had the phone in hand, there's a sad data point for anyone paying attention.  If he did have one, chances are the phone departed the mount during the crash.
