Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit has unveiled a strategy devised by the Ministry of Transport to elevate Suvarnabhumi Airport into the world's top 20 airports by the year 2029. This plan aligns with the Thai government's aspiration to establish Thailand as a leading global aviation center. The proposal comes on the heels of the airport's ascent to the 58th spot in 2024's Skytrax World's Best Airport rankings. The year prior, it had been ranked 68th.

At present, Suvarnabhumi Airport, known for being one of the busiest across Asia, intends to increase its handling capacity to 170 million passengers and one million flights each year by 2029. Furthermore, there are ambitions to expand these numbers to 210 million passengers and 1.2 million flights annually by the year 2034. Bangkok's Don Mueang Airport, mainly serving low-cost airlines, also managed to secure a position among the top 10 in Skytrax's 2024 list of World's Best Low-Cost Airline Terminals.

Between October 2023 and May 2024, the passenger traffic at Suvarnabhumi amounted to 81.05 million, which represents 83.4% of its passenger count compared to the period before the pandemic. It handled approximately 48.95 million domestic travelers. During this period, the airport also handled 490,970 flights, which is about 81% of the total flights handled in 2019.

Suvarnabhumi is actively working on expansion projects, including increasing terminal space and finalizing a third runway. The completion of these projects, targeted for September, is expected to increase the airport's flight handling capacity from 68 to 94 flights per hour.

The problem is that Skytrax rankings is not based on how many passengers, but on an airport customer satisfaction survey, assessing customer service and facilities.

With regards to the Suvarnabhumi expansion, I have posted this before, but the AOT (Airports of Thailand) expansion plans are;

Suvarnabhumi Airport, East Expansion Project:

Budget: 12.5 billion baht
Area Increase: 81,000 sqm
Additional Passengers: 15 million
Tender Planned: November this year

Suvarnabhumi Airport South Expansion Project:

Budget: 120 billion baht
Additional Passengers: 60 million annually
Facilities Expansion: 512,000 sqm
Planning Phase: 2024-2025
Design: 2025-2026
Tender Opening: 2027

Runway 3:

Operations Start: September 2024
2025 Flights: 75, Revenue: 4.7 billion baht
2026 Flights: 85, Revenue: 8.6 billion baht
2027 Flights: 94, Revenue: 9.1 billion baht

Suvarnabhumi Airport West Expansion Project:

- Satellite 2 Terminal Construction
- Runway 4 Construction

Once completed, Suvarnabhumi is expected to handle around 150 million passengers per year, with a capacity for approximately 120 flights per hour.

The world should give in and finally admit that Thailand is the hub of all hubs and number one in the whole world😇

It certainly is better then Manila which is probably one of the worst.  Just this week BKK added about 200 Immigration staff fresh out of the academy.  So,  with the infrastructure upgrades seems they are trying.  Top 20 though?  I doubt it.
