In a stunning confession following his arrest, a 27-year-old man has admitted to a string of crimes in Chiang Mai, including murder, an audacious gold heist, and car theft.

The suspect, whose identity has been revealed as Niphitphon Sombunsukying, was detained at his home in Doi Saket, with police recovering part of the stolen goods and a firearm allegedly used in the crimes.

Niphitphon's arrest ended a frantic week for local law enforcement, who had been tracing the origins of a robbery at a major department store where 70 baht-weight of gold was taken—an audacious theft amounting to a significant financial loss.

But the crime spree began with even darker deeds: according to police records, Niphitphon murdered a local rider, commandeered his vehicle, and then committed the robbery.

In his confession, Niphitphon outlined his motives, explaining a desperate attempt to resolve a massive financial burden. His family, he claimed, was mired in a 10-million-baht debt resultant from a pyramid scheme. The elaborate premeditation of his crimes, which he confessed to planning for over a year, suggests a chilling level of dedication to this cause.

The sequence of events as detailed by the suspect portrays a cold and calculated approach. After scouting the gold shop and its surroundings meticulously, he initiated his plan by murdering the rider to secure transportation to the store.

The crime scene, a quiet area near Wat Pha Lat, was where he later abandoned the body, an action demonstrating a disturbing level of criminal proficiency.

The aftermath involved selling off the stolen gold—a plan that faltered as local gold shop owners, sensing the irregularity of Niphitphon's offerings, coordinated to thwart his attempts to liquidate the stolen items.

This case has not only sent ripples through Chiang Mai but also raised issues regarding social pressures and the extremes to which individuals might go to resolve financial woes.

The local police are continuing their investigation, focusing on recovering all stolen items and further examining the circumstances leading to this desperate crime spree.
