Stand down Joe, (a little), stand up Ms Harris !

Joe Biden remains well respected by much of America despite his obvious frailties - he has a  lot of grit and experience and there's no need to chuck it all aside.

 

So why doesn't Biden simply step down to Vice President and carry out that usual advisory role with Kamala Harris taking over as President ?

 

I'm a Brit and claim no expertise in US matters but I think such a move would appeal to most Democrats, attracting many waverers and also some Republicans who rightly dread the ascendance of Trump . . . .

Biden dropping out of the race is no great tragedy for anyone, he's the oldest U.S. President ever and it's no surprise that at his age he's no longer fit. That's human. That's normal. And Biden has done a yeoman's job in a lifelong political career. He deserves respect and appreciation. And it's not at all equivalent to the sad state of the Republican Party, that has been taken over and utterly corrupted by one madman.

Take a bow, Joe. You deserve a hearty round of thanks and appreciation, having done a yeoman's job in politics and survived a term as President with no impeachment. It's OK to be angry about Trump's election in 2016; that need not have happened. Blame Hillary, she deserves it, and gets credit also for other Democratic Party errors and omissions.

But now it's 2024, you're the oldest President in U.S. History. And it shows. You are no longer fit. Take some time to smell the roses before you push up daisies. No regrets.

At the time I wrote this, no one was talking about Kamala Harris.  There was an unspoken consensus that some Great White Male Hope would step up to do the job.  Kamala is going to get huge support from women, black men, and most of the white men who normally vote Democrat. On the other hand, any GWMH (see above) would have received a huge backlash from all the women and all the blacks who normally vote Democrat, for stealing what is rightfully hers.
