Former Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung has publicly severed ties with Thailand’s Pheu Thai Party, signalling his potential move to join the Palang Pracharath Party. This rupture follows an altercation with Pheu Thai patriarch Thaksin Shinawatra and brewing tensions within the party.

 

Addressing reporters from his home on Wednesday, Chalerm lambasted the Pheu Thai leadership for calling him “undisciplined” after he and his son, Wan Yubamrung, visited Kamronwit Toopkrajang, a Pheu Thai rival, during the recent Provincial Administrative Organisation (PAO) elections in Pathum Thani. Chalerm asserted their visit was purely familial as Toopkrajang is a close family friend.

 

“I was accused of being undisciplined. If I am so accused, I want to know how many 'disciplined' people will be left in the Pheu Thai party,” declared Chalerm. He then invited Pheu Thai to expel him from their ranks, expressing a desire to clarify the situation publicly.

 

Under Thailand’s 2017 Constitution, an MP can retain their seat if expelled from a political party but not if they resign. Chalerm hinted at his interest in joining the Palang Pracharath Party but insisted he would wait for Pheu Thai’s decision.

 

The veteran politician didn’t mince words about his strained relationship with Thaksin. “I want to debate the person who slept in the hospital for just 2 hours,” Chalerm remarked, possibly alluding to Thaksin's short hospital stays. “I don’t want to even hear his name.”

 

Chalerm and Thaksin’s partnership spans over two decades, dating back to their time in the Thai Rak Thai Party, Pheu Thai’s predecessor. Chalerm’s son, Wan Yubamrung, has already made the switch to Palang Pracharath as of Tuesday.

 

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how this political shakeup will impact Pheu Thai and Thailand’s political landscape. Chalerm’s grandson, Archawin Yubamrung, currently a ministerial adviser, is also under pressure to reconsider his political allegiance.

It could be. But I don't think much will happen.

Years ago, people said that Chalerm knows all the dirt about anybody. That made him pretty much untouchable.

I am also sure that other politicians will know lots of bad things about Chalerm.

Now, will all of them publish what they know, and they will all destroy each other?

Or will they just continue like usual, nobody exposes anybody else.

Which hospital was that?

Hmm! Does that mean someone was ONLY at the hospital for just 2 hours and was spirited away? Well, that explains the reason members of the opposition on a fact finding mission to the hospital were denied access to his room.

Absolutely. Chalerm is probably one of the most corrupt officials Thailand has ever had, and that is saying something, in a country as corrupt as Thailand.
His sons are no better, by the way. Didn’t one of them shoot someone in the head in a busy night club? There were dozens of witnesses yet he never spent one minute in jail for that. If memory serves, he became a firearms instructor with the RTP after that. You can’t make sh!t like that up.

Thavisin removed as PM  BJT, which now seemingly controls the senate, puts Anutin in as PM.  People leave the PTP.

 

That will remove the PTP from everything but nominal power in name only and put the BJT/PPP in full power, making Thaksin look very weak to the people.

 

I am looking forward to the MFP doing the smart thing and sitting back to make motions that the people asked them to, such as constitutional amdts, and playing the loyal opposition.  

 

Also have to wonder how long it will be before they cancel the MFP and have to deal with MFP 2.0

Well, well, what do you know. Chalerm was a serious boozer back in the day and I assume he got cross not being invited to Dr T's birthday party yesterday - hence the anger. Not only the missing booze but the loss of face under one of his dozens of luxury cars parked somewhere on the Thonburi side of the capital 😉 

Anyone who takes exception with Thaksin is likely taking a moral stand of some sort, against the man who has completely sold out his party, and his people, in order to return to his country and not serve time behind bars.

 

Kudos to Chalerm, for calling out this morally bankrupt man.

Well I have been here for a long time also.

 

I well remember the first Thaksin government was the first civilian government ever to complete the full 4 year term. At his re-election, his party TRT won an overwhelming majority of seats in parliament.

Item 23 Thaksin was pm from 09 February until 19 September 2006 when he was overthrown by yet another military coup.

I love Chalerm Yubamrung. This guy makes Thai politics fun. Of course, he's corrupt as hell, but he's still fun if you're not one of his victims.

I mean no offense to any of you posters debating this article, but do you really care of think your opinion makes a difference?  Do you think Thai people have opinions that make a difference?  Do you think that anything makes a difference here?  It’s the same stories on a loop for hundreds of years.  Nothing changes. It’s kike reading every page of those books where you would make a decision and finally end up at the ending. Then read it again and make different decisions, flip through, and end up at the same ending. Until you became so frustrated that you read the entire thin front to back and the story makes no sense and then you end up at the same conclusion.

Sadly, NO general has ever been punished for treason against an elected government, which is what a military coup is.

 

In his particular case he was elected as a privy councillor.

I seem to remember it was Charlerm who made a statement saying that the army and it's leaders wouldn't be put on trial for the deaths during the Red Shirt protests as the army was only following orders.  Which they weren't. 

Little chance any of these will ever be held accountable for any of their misdeeds.
