to those of you who speak thai fluently, accent n all..

whenever you go out, say for a meal or a beer or are in a tourist ghetto - do you hide the fact that you can speak Thai or do you just come right out with it?

I am curious how AN members approach this topic as I myself have had many negative interactions with locals once they are aware that I can speak the lingo.

I do not speak Thai in public, rarely in private or at work.

May I ask your reasons for refraining from speaking Thai, Ralf?

I agree with most, if I am with my wife, a Thai, I usually just keep quiet and listen.  She knows I understand and could speak but says just act like you don't speak.  If I am by myself I usually chat with them and they become much more friendly while chatting about everything.

Why care what others say? They earn 400 baht a day serving you food. You spend that in 10 minutes. Let them say nasty things.
