34 Days And No Visa

Featured Replies

Hi there,

I'm about to leave for Bangkok on Sunday with a friend. We're going to be in Thailand for 34 days, so should technically have a 60 day visa (we didn't think about the 30 day visa when we booked the flight and now can't change it). Because of lack of time we haven't been able to sort out a visa... So to get us into the country we have cheap onward flights we won't use within the 30 days.

However we'll need to either extend the 30 day visa or do a visa run I imagine... as running over 4 days is a bit risky.

What is the easiest option? I've heard you can extend the visa at immigration offices in most states. Would this have to be done towards the end of the 30 days? We couldn't just buy a visa when we arrive?

Or how about going over the border to say Cambodia and back again? Is this feasible to do in a day or so... can we just pop across and back again? If so, where's best to go?

Thanks for any advice. I realise we've left it so last minute... it's worrying me a bit but i'm sure it'll be fine.

The airline probably won't carry you without a visa because your stay exceeds 30 days. It is very risky to overstay ( and it costs 500 baht a day fine which is stamped in your passport )

That's why we've bought onward flights to Singapore (within the 30 days), which we may or may not use. Is it easy to extend the visa/go out and in again to get a new 30 day visa?

You can either do a border run (go out of Thailand and back in) and you will get another 30 days stamp prividing you do not have any other 30 days stamps recently.

You cna also go to any immigration offices and you should be able to get a 7 days extension added on your 30 days by showing your return ticket. Tjis will cost you 1.900 baht each.

But we'll get a 30 day stamp when we arrive.... It'll be okay by the end of the stay though? If we go a few days before the current one's running out?

Thanks very much :o

Zanzibel, here is "the rule" concerning entry under tourist visa exemption from the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs website. "Foreigners who enter the Kingdom under the Tourist Visa Exemption category may re-enter and stay in Thailand for a cumulative duration of stay of not exceeding 90 days within any 6-month period from the date of first entry."

So, it looks like your options are:

1) make a border run

2) get a 7-day extension

happy travelling, :o

(provided you're allowed on the plane in the first place)
