They should also charge for them. Laos and Cambodia charge so why Is Thailand free. I would be affected but would rather pay a,few thousand baht than have the worry of being rejected

Yeah. Very unlikely they will alter it drastically. Maybe small changes like a shorter duration or more scrutiny, but unlikely to be scrapped altogether.
