Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has assured residents of Bangkok that fears of flooding are unfounded, emphasising that current rainwater levels are significantly lower compared to the devastating 2011 floods. On Wednesday, Ms. Paetongtarn reviewed the water situation at the Royal Irrigation Department in Nonthaburi.

 

In 2011, Thailand faced the fury of five storms and saw a rainfall increase of over 25% beyond the average. In contrast, this year's figures show only a 2% rise above usual rainfall levels, and just one storm has struck. Major reservoirs still have room to retain water, unlike in 2011 when they reached capacity, forcing massive water releases.

 

"For those concerned about potential flooding in Bangkok, there is no need to worry. Bangkok will not be flooded," assured Ms. Paetongtarn.

 

Currently, rainfall in northern areas is contributing to water flow from the Ping, Wang, Yom, and Nan rivers into the Chao Phraya River. The Chao Phraya Dam in Chai Nat is releasing water at 1,899 cubic metres per second, a rate comfortably managed by current infrastructure.

The Water Resources Department is closely monitoring at the Bang Sai station to ensure flow rates remain under 3,000 cubic metres per second in Ayutthaya.

 

Local authorities are prepared, deploying drainage and pumping efforts to direct water efficiently to the Gulf of Thailand, managing a daily capacity of about 164 million cubic metres, reported Bangkok Post.

 

Looking ahead, the Meteorological Department forecasts mixed weather, with possible storms and rainfall due to a cold front from China, affecting Bangkok, among other regions.

 

Meanwhile, Jirayu Houngsub, a disaster relief spokesman, warned of potential overflow along Chiang Rai's Kok River due to expected heavy rains, potentially impacting 147 square kilometres across six districts.

I am not sure she actually, or if any of them, understand the problem. Here they are talking about 2011, and it will not be same disaster this year. Sure, maybe it wont. That is not the point. What about the flooding 3 years ago? What about two years ago? Or what about last year? This is an ongoing problem 1-2 periods every year. That´s what they should focus on. Just comparing to the worst disaster in 2 decades, is just showing that they already lost the fight.

She doesn't live near the flooding. Nor does the richest guy here live in CNX during the smoke season. They don't care.

I'm sure it won't flood.

Haha.... In some areas there is already flooding. So how can she make this comment? She is only thinking about the areas of Bangkok that she lives and works in I presume. 

Hearing her say that (her aunt told the same to Western Digital and Honda in 2011 for Ayutthaya.... remember that?) I'm hoping 30+ floor is high enough...

During the mega-flood we stayed in our 10th floor condo. Unfortunately, both the building transformer and genset were in the basement!!

 

We spent nearly 6 months operating with a 1.2kW generator on the balcony. No lifts of course, we hauled food and fuel up using a block and tackle.

We had 6 to 9 inches (over 20cm) of flood along On Nut Road etc in Prawet/Samut Prakan border last night.

 

When does it become a flood?

Sure. Just like in 2011. Bangkok won't be flooded. You lot just didn't say the floodwaters will be diverted to areas surrounding Bangkok. The company I was working with then was involved with relief efforts, so I know how bad it was. While I can understand why BKK cannot be flooded, I hope the surrounding districts can be saved too. No, don't beggar me for a solution. You are the prime minister, not me. It's your problem, kid. Just don't come up with feather-brained ideas like your aunt did - getting boats to line abreast at full throttle to push water out of the Chao Phraya was a classic display of brilliant dim-wittedness.

I'd be careful with giving assurances like that. As we know from previous experience, when it floods, it floods - little she can do about it right then. Of course there's things they could have done proactively...

I am a lot higher than that, but how does that help when the ground floor is cut-off by flooding?

Keeping your toes dry is not much use if there is no food, etc., available 30 floors up, is it?

time it rains: live with it!  

If I remember correctly last week they claimed there would be no flooding but there would be areas of " increased levels of  stagnant water" . 

The latest rumours are that she's changing her surname from Shinawatra to Canute...  

They made sure of that after the 2011 flood ,go to Rangdit and take a look at the bank of piles they installed on the south side of the conal there.
