Finance Ministry Weighs 10,000 Baht Benefit for Senior Thais: A Boost or Burden?

The Finance Ministry of Thailand finds itself in the spotlight today as it considers an intriguing proposal- a cash benefit of 10,000 baht (£228) to Thai citizens over the age of 60. The proposition, forwarded by former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra during his recent election campaign in Udon Thani province, targets the senior citizens who are currently excluded from the state welfare system.

 

Finance Minister, Pichai Chunhavajira, announced his intention to present the idea at the Economic Stimulating Committee's forthcoming meeting. The committee, overseen by Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, will assess Shinawatra’s recommendation.

 

Chunhavajira hinted toward positivity for the suggestion. Given that Thailand's senior population sans state welfare cards is seen as not excessively large, adopting such a benefit scheme might prove less of a burden to the national treasury, he conveyed. He also clarified that this potential cash benefit would act as an independent aid system and would not be integrated with the broader 'digital wallet' scheme currently in operation.

 

 

The proposal, novel in its concept, has sparked conversation across sectors regarding the balance between boosting the nation's economy whilst ensuring the budgetary restraints remain unhampered. With the Finance Ministry recognising the need for further discussions, this considered benefit may prove the next step in redefining Thailand’s social welfare structure.

 

However, several questions hang in the balance surrounding the financial feasibility of such a move, and its ultimate impact on the well-being of senior citizens.
