What documents do I need to fly out of Bangkok with my 12 year old Thai-Australian daughter.

She has both Thai and Australian passports. She travelled to Australia once before exiting Thailand on her Thai passport. Her Australian passport was issued in Bangkok but that is not recorded on the page with her picture ...it just says issued Australia. There are no stamps of any kind in her Australian passport.

Her last name is the same as mine in both passports and her ID Card.

I've read somewhere ages ago that a document from her mother issued at the Amphur is needed. I also heard that a letter from her Mum stamped at the police station works. And finally I've heard that because we share the same surname there should be no problem.

I don't like to take risks.... especially because missing flights is very expensive.

Good  advice (like... been there, done that advice) will be very much appreciated.

Thanks a lot... Marko

Exit Thailand on the Thai passport, enter Australia on the Australian. Exit Australia on the Australian and enter Thailand back on the Thai passport. Pretty simple, done it many times with my Aus/Thai kids. If you are travelling with the mum, then no problem or need for Ampur stuff. Lots of conflicting info re; need for permission from mum letters. Personally, I have taken my son to Aust without it - and had no problems. If you are worried about it, then cover your bases with a visit to the amphur.

Firstly, I'll start with an assumption...  It is just you and your Daughter travelling (without mother).

1) The Passport question, if it even is a question, its is a no brainer:

- Show the Aus Passport on Check-in at the Airline as they'll want to know visa status (no need for a visa obviously).

- Exit Thailand on the Thai passport (and get an exit stamp)

- Enter Aus on Aus Passport (this is a called an Air-swap and very common).

On to what I suspect the actual question of the Op is -

2) Documentation to prove you have parental permission to travel out of Thailand with your daughter (without the mother).

- Officially, you will need an Affirmation of Parental Consent, a letter signed by and official from your local Amphur office

- Realistically, the letter on its own 'should' be fine, signed by your Wife (with a singed copy of wife's passport).

- Have your wife standing by ready to receive a call from immigration just in case.

--------

Examples:

- I have travelled out of the country twice with my Son (without my Wife / his mum), I had a consent letter just incase, I was not asked for it (my son was 3 on one occasion, 4 on another).

- I have friends who were travelling with their child and immigration questioned them, they had no consent letter but a quick call to the mother sorted things out.

- I do not know of anyone rejected (but that does not mean its not a possibility - so if you want to be sure, get the parental consent letter signed).

Exit on the Australia passport.

OP should exit with the Thai passport and enter Australia with the Aussie passport. That's all the "papers" you need.

Its not though is it ? (rhetorical)....... because the Op has implied that he is travelling with out the mother, and thus immigration have been known to ask questions of 'single parents' travelling with a child.

Would it also be the case the other way around, if the mother was travelling with the child, would immigration ask to phone the father or provide some documents the father allows the child to travel out of the country?

Theoretically yes...   But I imagine some psychology also comes into it on the part of the Immigration officers.

A friend was recently travelling with her son (11 years old) - she has not officially changed her name, although legally married.

Immigration officers asked the Son a couple of questions... (is this your mother etc), they were easily satisfied by the answers.
