On Sat 17 at 6 PM there was this parade for the marathon and yes, 1 (one) farang volunteer walked with the police group. He looked rather ashamed, like a dog getting caught sh*tting where he shouldn't.

So he should be.

Was it you Howard?

There is a much publisized psychological profile for "police wannabees" and they abound on the edges of police forces the world around. Many don't qualify to become real policemen due to their psychological problems.

Jack Ruby is a prime example of a "police hanger on" (He was the guy who killed Kenney's assasin, Lee Harvey Oswald). Rarely do the police dignify these "types" by acknowledging them in public, although they do use them on occasion as snitches. Most undercover work is done by policemen as the "wanabees" are too difficult to control when given any power at all.

Most police forcers have official volunteers or auxilliaries who are uniformed, but unarrmed, and are relegated to crowd control, barricade manning and the like. Never gathering evidence, sting operations and "raids". After all, how reliiable would their testimoney be when called upon to give evidence in court.

Thai "shakedowns" are a different matter and clearly a falang would be useful in fooling bar owners once. But surely, that falang would not later testify in court, my guess the matter never is intended to end up in court. If they are shakedowns, what crime is the falang committing? As one poster wisely advanced, certainly a labor code violation of working without a permit. How good is the testimoney of a falang who is violating the law at the time of the bust?

"Fake" cops are nothing new, they are just more visable on Halloween! However, I suspect, as many have pointed out, it is a far more dangerous avocation in Thailand than in most countries.
