My NMAX has the ABS light showing. It stops great but the light is on.😐

I took it to the local Yamaha dealer to diagnose and they said it was the ABS pump (hydraulic unit) that's the fault. 

Damn, I was hoping it was just a wheel sensor.🤥

 

Looking at the Yamaha parts catalogue the price the dealer gave me ( for just the part mind you without labour charge to fit) is 20.748 baht is correct,

As I said it stops fine without the ABS working, it's just the light is always on. They say it can't be turned off. 

Looking at other bikes on  Facebook marketplace place there are lots for sale with the ABS light on 555 so it looks like people get a shock when told how much to fix so put them up for sale.

I did find a YouTube video and someone shows a workaround to get the light off by getting a Honda Click wheel sensor and fitting that but I don't fancy doing that.

 

Has anyone else had this trouble? Are any second-hand parts around? or a non-genuine make available?

 

Any suggestions are welcome.

I met a guy who had Xmax and the same issue, he said he did extensive research and went to quite a few mechanics. It turns out the Nmax and Xmax have the exact same ABS unit and it's 20k baht to replace for both. He said that's like half the price of Nmax and he would never dream of paying it..! 

 

But for his Xmax he was seriously considering it, until a guy told him the unit can be repaired for 2000 baht...😳

 

He was in Phuket and this repair can only be done by a guy in Bangkok. So the mechanic opened his ABS unit and shipped it to Bangkok, he couldn't use his bike for about two weeks. Then the unit came back all repaired and working, cost was 2k + some shipping...!? 

 

I don't know if it meant just the light was okay, or the ABS would actually do it's job properly...? 🤔

 

I'm sorry I have no contact, but ask on Thai Facebook Xmax or Nmax groups, I'm sure somebody reply,... in Thai, need Google Translate...

I would be asking serious questions about who 'this guy' is and how professional and reliable is the repair. 

 

I have an Aerox with ABS. I've had it for 4 years, however I've only had to use the brakes full on in dire emergency once. And there's no doubt in my mind that ABS saved my skin that day. No other bike I've ever ridden would have stopped as quickly and as safely as my Aerox did.

 

If my ABS went on the blink, I'd get it fixed using genuine parts at my local Yamaha dealer. No ifs, no buts!

I probably go with you on that too, but there are some people don't care about ABS at all, they say they have enough skill to stop properly without ABS...! 

 

And some people just want to stop the light showing on the dash, so I guess it's really not important to them... 

 

It's not hard to test ABS either, I do this almost every month, just get speed up to 40/50kph in a quiet dry road and pull the brake hard, can see if it works or not, should definitely try that after any repair too...

I got 2 Nmax 155 and an Areox.

These share the same engine but the Nmax have ABS, and the Aerox don't.

The Aerox stops just fine without it and the NMAX with the ABS fault.

If it didn't cost so much for the part I would change it. 

I have found 2 vendors via facebook that offer a work around to the ABS system. One has a workshop and seems to specialise in NMAX.

Well it's up to you. I've already made my thoughts clear on that issue. Here's an interesting comment from The Nation:

 

 'From 2024, motorcycle ABS will be mandatory in Thailand for all new models over 125 cc. - Roughly 25 percent of accidents involving motorized two-wheelers could be prevented by motorcycle ABS'.
