My NMAX has the ABS light showing. It stops great but the light is on.😐

I took it to the local Yamaha dealer to diagnose and they said it was the ABS pump (hydraulic unit) that's the fault.

Damn, I was hoping it was just a wheel sensor.🤥

Looking at the Yamaha parts catalogue the price the dealer gave me ( for just the part mind you without labour charge to fit) is 20.748 baht is correct,

As I said it stops fine without the ABS working, it's just the light is always on. They say it can't be turned off.

Looking at other bikes on  Facebook marketplace place there are lots for sale with the ABS light on 555 so it looks like people get a shock when told how much to fix so put them up for sale.

I did find a YouTube video and someone shows a workaround to get the light off by getting a Honda Click wheel sensor and fitting that but I don't fancy doing that.

Has anyone else had this trouble? Are any second-hand parts around? or a non-genuine make available?

Any suggestions are welcome.

I met a guy who had Xmax and the same issue, he said he did extensive research and went to quite a few mechanics. It turns out the Nmax and Xmax have the exact same ABS unit and it's 20k baht to replace for both. He said that's like half the price of Nmax and he would never dream of paying it..!

But for his Xmax he was seriously considering it, until a guy told him the unit can be repaired for 2000 baht...😳

He was in Phuket and this repair can only be done by a guy in Bangkok. So the mechanic opened his ABS unit and shipped it to Bangkok, he couldn't use his bike for about two weeks. Then the unit came back all repaired and working, cost was 2k + some shipping...!?

I don't know if it meant just the light was okay, or the ABS would actually do it's job properly...? 🤔

I'm sorry I have no contact, but ask on Thai Facebook Xmax or Nmax groups, I'm sure somebody reply,... in Thai, need Google Translate...

I would be asking serious questions about who 'this guy' is and how professional and reliable is the repair.

I have an Aerox with ABS. I've had it for 4 years, however I've only had to use the brakes full on in dire emergency once. And there's no doubt in my mind that ABS saved my skin that day. No other bike I've ever ridden would have stopped as quickly and as safely as my Aerox did.

If my ABS went on the blink, I'd get it fixed using genuine parts at my local Yamaha dealer. No ifs, no buts!

I probably go with you on that too, but there are some people don't care about ABS at all, they say they have enough skill to stop properly without ABS...!

And some people just want to stop the light showing on the dash, so I guess it's really not important to them...

It's not hard to test ABS either, I do this almost every month, just get speed up to 40/50kph in a quiet dry road and pull the brake hard, can see if it works or not, should definitely try that after any repair too...

I got 2 Nmax 155 and an Areox.

These share the same engine but the Nmax have ABS, and the Aerox don't.

The Aerox stops just fine without it and the NMAX with the ABS fault.

If it didn't cost so much for the part I would change it.

I have found 2 vendors via facebook that offer a work around to the ABS system. One has a workshop and seems to specialise in NMAX.

Well it's up to you. I've already made my thoughts clear on that issue. Here's an interesting comment from The Nation:

'From 2024, motorcycle ABS will be mandatory in Thailand for all new models over 125 cc. - Roughly 25 percent of accidents involving motorized two-wheelers could be prevented by motorcycle ABS'.

The full article makes for interesting reading. the link is below. Keep safe out there.

Interesting read for sure.

25% reduction in accidents would be great.

papa has been down a couple times

which ABS might have prevented.

You could put black  tape over the light.

Totally with you on that.  I'm old school and was one of them that was convinced all this 'new tech' was unecessary. Until that is, a couple of years ago when the traffic in front just suddenly stopped - as happens so often in Thailand. I stopped within inches of the car in front and I'm absolutely sure I wouldn't have done without ABS.  My ER6 has ABS and following that incident I've changed my attitude so much that I would never buy a bike without ABS now.

Check out online sources in Thailand.  I just googled it in the UK and new & used ABS pumps for a 125 Nmax start at around 4500 baht.  If you are adverse to buying non genuine parts, just remember this - it is highly unlikely that Yamaha actually make this part - they almost certainly buy them in. Bike and car manufacturers these days are more or less assembly plants, they actually make very little.

Apparently the units can also be repaired - if you google it you will find several 'how to' videos on youtube.

Also, ask at a car repair shop - in the UK there are many specialist companies that repair ABS pumps, there may be similar in Thailand.  A few years back the electronic side of the ABS unit on my BMW failed and a new one was around 70,000 baht.  I sent it to a repairer by post and had it done for 7500 with a lifetime guarantee.

Black tape on the light. ABS does not do miracles. If you can brake properly you do not need abs. If you can't, you can drop your bike anyway during braking with abs. I would not spend money for that repair. How do you think bikers survived in 80's riding bikes at 270 km/h and needing stop the bike asap? There was no abs then and it's not needed even today. Just keep riding!

No not really.

I have been riding bikes of all sizes and types for years.

I have never had a bike with ABS before. The NMAX I have are the first.

While ABS is nice granted yes, personally speaking, I don't consider it a "must have".

IF a bike I end up having has it then fine, if not then oh well no problem.

If something bad is gonna happen and there's nothing you can do to avoid it and say its that fast that even having ABS wont make a difference.

thats nice but I got a 155cc. Yamaha price is 20,000 baht for the genuine 155cc item.

Update

Seached around on Facebook and found a workshop that sells an "ABS box" as he calls it to bypass the ABS system.

There are plenty of good reviews for this product he sells and he can fit it. So looks like I will be paying him a visit soon.

So check out the prices for a 155 - it may even be the same part.

Errr I did..... its 20,000 baht.... as I have said

I mean check it out in the same way that I did.  I have already told you - it is highly unlikely that Yamaha make the pump.  Very often there is nothing to be gained from buying an OEM item. Not trying to be a smartass - I'm an ex mechanic and as such, I know a little bit of what I'm talking about.

Case in point, many years ago a friend borrowed my van and had an accident, not too serious but both headlamps were smashed.  A brand new headlamp from Citroen in a Citroen box was over £200. A Valeo headlamp from a local autoparts shop was £65.  I had my van from new, the headlamps were original. When I removed the broken headlamps they were stamped 'Valeo' on the back.  Citroen don't make headlamps and I doubt Yamaha make ABS pumps, yours is very likely to have been made by Mitsubishi Industries.

I have, just last week, replaced the downstream lamda sensor on my Toyota. Toyota price £86, I paid £12.95 on Ebay. I could have paid £19.95 and got a 5 year guarantee.

As I explained earlier car and motorcyle manufacturers are more or less just 'assembly plants' these days - they buy the majority of their components in and put them together.

The bike is now "fixed"

I rode down the 304 to Min Buri to the workshop I had found on Facebook.

The dude did a test first then fitted his "ABS box" as he calls them. It's just that, a small module that goes into the wiring loom.

My understanding is that it bypasses the system, essentially putting it to sleep and turning off the light on the display.

So as I said before the brakes work as they should just no ABS.

It took less than 20 mins to install and he said it comes with a 1 year guarantee.

Thanks for the feedback, but please mention this if/when selling the bike, it's an important information to pass on...!

If I do I wouldn't mention it. There are plenty for sale on facebook with the ABS and engine management lights on and the sellers make no reference to this and say the bike is in good condition!

Yes, but their buyer can see the light and deal with it. In your case the light is switched off (hidden} and no ABS...!? very unfair if you ask me...! You don't mind buying a bike like that yourself...? 🤔
