A violent brawl erupted among inmates at Pattani Central Prison during a futsal match, leaving one person dead and 13 others injured. Authorities were able to bring the situation under control, but investigations are ongoing.

The incident occurred on the morning of 1 January, at the prison located in Bana subdistrict, Mueang District, Pattani Province. Pol. Col. Jeffrey Sailamanakul, Chief of Mueang Pattani Police Station, was informed of the clash and immediately dispatched officers to the scene.

Upon arrival, rescue teams and ambulances were already transporting the injured to Pattani Hospital. Twelve inmates suffered minor injuries, while one was critically injured. Another inmate was fatally stabbed with a sharp object and had multiple bruises on his body.

The riot began during a futsal competition organised by the prison as part of New Year’s celebrations to promote exercise and relaxation among inmates. According to witnesses, tensions escalated during the match, leading to an altercation between players. The dispute quickly spread to the spectators, who joined the fight with makeshift weapons, including sharp iron rods.

Prison officials and guards intervened to break up the melee and restore order. Injured inmates were transported to hospital, while authorities began investigating the cause of the violence.

One inmate, who sustained injuries while trying to intervene, told reporters, “I didn’t have any issue with anyone. I was only trying to stop the fight, but I ended up getting hurt.”

Pattani Deputy Governor Chaiporn Niyomkaew stated that the prison had organised the futsal event as part of its New Year activities. He confirmed that the situation in the prison is now under control but announced the suspension of all future activities until further notice.

“The prison already has strict measures in place to prevent violence, but we will investigate the root cause of this incident and ensure stronger enforcement,” Chaiporn added.

Meanwhile, Justice Minister Pol. Col. Thawee Sodsong has ordered an urgent review of the incident. Investigators are working to identify and charge those responsible for the violence.

Maybe the futsal table?

Put in a pinball machine instead.

Think you misunderstood what futsal is.

It is a a modified form of football/soccer played with normally five players per side on a smaller hard court.
