Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called on Ukraine's allies to deliver 300 Patriot interceptor missiles for the coming winter, warning that stronger air defences are essential as Russia continues its long-range attacks on civilian infrastructure. The appeal came as European leaders unveiled plans for a new continent-wide anti-ballistic missile programme, offering Ukraine a longer-term defence solution while reinforcing military cooperation across Europe. Winter Air Defence Becomes the Immediate Priority Zelenskyy welcomed the launch of the Freyja missile defence project, a European-backed initiative developed from Ukraine's wartime experience, but stressed it would not address Kyiv's immediate needs. He said Ukraine requires a "winter package" of air defence missiles, calculating that around 100 Patriot interceptors per month – 300 in total over the winter – would be needed to protect cities and critical infrastructure from intensified Russian strikes. Although US President Donald Trump has pledged to allow Ukraine to manufacture Patriot missiles under licence, domestic production is expected to take time because of the system's technical complexity and reliance on specialised American-made components. Europe Steps Up Its Military Support The announcement came during talks in Paris involving Ukraine and nine European partners, including the UK, France and Germany, aimed at strengthening Europe's collective missile shield. Britain also joined the European Union's €90 billion support loan for Ukraine, allowing UK defence companies to supply additional military equipment financed through the programme. French President Emmanuel Macron announced a roadmap for Ukraine to receive 16 Rafale fighter jets, with the first expected to enter service between 2028 and 2029. He also confirmed Kyiv would receive new-generation SAMP/T air defence systems, with deliveries due in the coming weeks. Preparing for the Long War Macron said a proposed multinational force intended for deployment after any future ceasefire would begin military exercises in neighbouring countries in the months ahead to test operational plans and demonstrate readiness. For Kyiv, however, the immediate challenge remains surviving another winter under sustained Russian missile and drone attacks. While Europe's long-term commitments continue to grow, Zelenskyy's latest appeal underlines that Ukraine's most urgent requirement is still a steady supply of advanced air defence interceptors before the coldest months arrive.
