Police raid reveals sim box scam in Bangkok apartment

Police in Region 1 raided an apartment in the Lat Phrao area, uncovering eight sim box devices used for scam calls to defraud victims out of millions. The apartment was rented by a foreign national. Efforts are underway to expand the investigation and make arrests.

 

Police Major General Worachat Saenkham, commander of the Region 1 Investigation Division, along with other high-ranking officers including Police Colonel Prathan Nantakobkul and Police Colonel Chutrakul Yosmadee, conducted a raid yesterday, January 13 at 8am.

 

Their operation was supported by the Analytical News Division and involved a search warrant from the Criminal Court, warrant number K.4/2568, dated January 12.

 

The search of the apartment in the Lat Phrao district was prompted by information from the AOC operations centre.

 

The police were alerted to a criminal using the phone number 082-328xxxx to deceive victims by impersonating officials and threatening involvement in illegal activities, leading victims to transfer money for alleged investigations.

 

 

One victim transferred 71,000 baht. Further investigation linked this phone number to 12 similar cases, with damages exceeding 1 million baht.

 

During the search, police discovered eight GSM gateway devices, each capable of holding up to 32 SIM cards, two internet modem devices, and one CCTV camera.

 

These items were seized for further investigation. Initial findings indicated that a foreign national rented the apartment on November 26 last year for 4,800 baht per month.

 

The involved parties face charges of illegal use, import, export, or trade of telecommunications equipment without proper licencing, and setting up telecommunications stations without authorisation, reported KhaoSod.

 

The police intend to continue their investigation to prosecute those involved in this scam operation.
