The opposition People’s Party (PP) has achieved a significant milestone in local politics, as candidate Weeradej Pupisit won the Provincial Administrative Organisation (PAO) presidential election in Lamphun.

 

Unofficial results indicate that 39 year old Weeradej defeated Anusorn Wongwan, a four-time veteran from the ruling Pheu Thai Party, in the election held on February 1. The PP presented 17 candidates for PAO president roles across 47 provinces but it was only in this northern province that the party secured a victory.

 

Born in Lamphun, Weeradej holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Chiang Mai University. He joined the People’s Party during its formation when it was known as the Future Forward Party (FFP), later becoming a party coordinator and centre head before deciding to enter local elections.

 

 

Weeradej explained that his motivation to contest local elections was driven by a desire to assist residents facing long-standing issues. His campaign team was primarily composed of younger individuals eager for change, reported Bangkok Post.

 

Despite the PP’s progressive stance being perceived as a challenge in attracting older voters, Weeradej’s campaign received support from a skilled team of assistants, which included Pita Limjaroenrat, the former leader of the disbanded Move Forward Party.

 

Politics is not unfamiliar territory for Weeradej’s family, with the Pupisit family considered by some as a significant political force. His father, Prasert, is a former Lamphun PAO president and currently serves as president of the Lamphun Chamber of Commerce.

They won a much bigger % at the national election, and still couldn't form the coalition government.

Just to clarify.

The Move Forward Party couldn't get 51% vote of the House even with a coalition. That triggered an additional vote by the military-junta appointed Senate that voted overwhelming for the pro-military coalition nominee.

Nothing to stop it from forming an opposition coalition in the House where it can try to push its political agenda.

A welcome victory.  PP since the ban imposed on Pita have taken a back seat in the media. Playing second fiddle to Thaksin and  his insatiable appetite for personal press coverage. 

More candidates,  increased publicity and momentum are required before future elections.

Let's hope he can make clear promises regarding these issues that he is able to keep.

You seem not to understand the context. It's significant in that he "defeated Anusorn Wongwan, a four-time veteran from the ruling Pheu Thai Party". The article is about the Lamphun provincial election not Thailand's provincial elections as a whole.

It seems to me that it is you who do not understand.

 

You are the one taking it out of context.

 

It IS about the PAO election as a whole, or why mention it at all. The PP won ONLY one seat on the entire PAO election  and were defeated everywhere else by ALL the other political parties. which make their one win somewhat of a consolation prize. If there had not been a PAO election, they would not even have got a mention.

 

Of course you failed to mention that the PTP party actually won 18 seats and lost only one  to the PP, who actually lost every other seat that they contested.

 

Compared with the results of the general election, it is a dismal showing.

People’s Party wins key Lamphun election victory.

Article is not about the other provincial elections. It's about Lamphun. The headline is a bit of a giveaway IMO.

This is the only mention of the POA elections that were held in Thailand. 12 out of 238 words. Not exactly what I'd call the key topic of the article.

I don't need luck in battles. At 80 I am too old to fight or even tilt at windmills.

 

IMHO the PP need to take a good look at all its policies and its leadership, keep the best bits, dump the rest, build up its war chest and start again.
