I'll be staying at the Renaissance Hotel on Laem Nan beach in a few weeks. Anyone know how far it is to Lamai beach? is it just a 5-min. stroll, or will i need some wheels?

Hi. From Renaissance Hotel / Resort ( in North Lamai ) to Lamai beach proper is not far as the crow flies.

However, if you want to walk along the coast you will have to turn right on your hotel beach, go about 2 km through quite rough rocks and coastal outcrops. Then along a small beach. Then more rocks. Then another small beach. Then more rocks.

Then you get to the top of Lamai beach, from there you will need to walk 3 to 5 km down the beach to get to the middle part of Lamai beach proper.

It is a reasonably tough walk, I did it years back, right from the place that hotel is at now.

Do NOT do this walk alone. Do NOT do this walk at night even in company. Tell you hotel you are going to walk around the rocks to the beach if you plan to do it, let them know when you are leaving and when you plan to return.

Best idea is to rent a motorcycle or a jeep and drive around there, only a few minutes drive.

PS: Renaissance is in a great location, very pretty, very quiet. Well away from the mainstream Lamai beach area.

Cheers

Thanks, Southbot; I can assure you i won't be attempting the coastal route now - sound treacherous!!

I think, there are some wrong informations here...!!!

Lamai Beach is from the Renaissance Resort by Road even 2-3 km faraway. from the Beachside, you can reach Lamai within about 500-600 meters.

5 km distance from the Renaissance are the hinta hinyai Rocks, miles after Lamai Beach.

no worries, you can easily walk this Part of the Island.

Hi,

Would you be so kind as to give some feedback on your stay at the Renaissance?

Perhaps also some feedback on the nearby amenities, convenience of location, road conditions, any floods there, attractions nearby, etc....

Thanks.

Southbot's advice can only be described as totally wrong in almost every aspect.

I know this area intimately, and can tell you that there is only one group of rocks that impede one's way to Lamai proper, that in front of Star Bay Resort. Unless the tide is very high, you can wade around them, or if not, climb over the one big rock in your way.

It takes about 35 or so minutes to walk and you will cross one run-off creek, which at this time of the year is easily waded. Even during the rains this November it was only thigh-deep (I walked it then). The distance is probably a kilometer or so. I have walked it many times. Make sure you do it in the morning or evening since in the day it can get hot.

As for the Renaissance, it is costly and isolated -- meaning you can't walk to the nightlife or food shops or anything in Lamai village. It is a nice place, no question, and if you don't want to have easy access to anything, it's great (if you can afford it).

I would recommend finding something along the main beach in Lamai. The Peninsula is a place in the same category as the Renaissance, and you can walk (easily) to all that Lamai has to offer.

Thanks Mark for the feedback. Will check out the Peninsula.

Cheers.
