Bangkok Battles Booming Lizard Population in Lumpini Park

Bangkok's Lumpini Park faces an unusual challenge as the population of water monitor lizards has surged, prompting city officials to find ways to handle the situation without disturbance. In the heart of the city, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is working to ensure peaceful coexistence between these sizable reptiles and park visitors.

 

Prapas Lueangsirinapha, head of the BMA's Environment Department, acknowledges the growing concerns among locals about the rapidly increasing lizard numbers. Although protected under the Wild Animal Conservation and Protection Act BE 2562, and illegal to hunt or harm, these lizards are viewed more as an ecological asset than a threat.

 

Experts from the Zoological Park Organisation of Thailand reassure the public that the lizards pose no danger unless provoked. They play a vital role in the ecosystem by disposing of animal carcasses and managing rodent populations.

 

 

The BMA is launching educational efforts to inform both locals and tourists about the positive role of these lizards, encouraging a peaceful cohabitation strategy. Discussions with the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation are ongoing to devise proper population management strategies.

 

Ittipol Ingprasarn, director of the Pathumwan district, stated that cleanup operations around Lumpini Park and nearby canals are crucial. These efforts aim to ward off animals that spread disease, ensuring these areas do not become sources of food for the lizards. Further collaborations with various agencies are being considered to maintain balance in the region.

 

In its quest to tame the wild at heart, Bangkok seeks to balance its vibrant urban ecosystem without disturbing the natural dwellers of Lumpini Park, reported The Thaiger.

I thought your pic had a "small face"

I am somewhat fond of the “ gin gai” , but then again I kept lizards as pets when younger including one fairly large iguana. 
One of our first dates I took my wife rowing on the pond at Lumpini and she was a bit alarmed by some of the monitors who seemed overly curious.
