A Hungarian man, reportedly under the influence, caused a scene at the site of a collapsed building, claiming his friends were trapped underneath the debris. He was eventually subdued by authorities.

Witnesses relayed that the incident transpired at the Office of the Auditor General collapse site. The Hungarian national, who flew from Hungary to Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport, initially hired a taxi for approximately 4,000 baht. He told the driver he would stop at the disaster scene before continuing to Pattaya.

Upon arrival, he questioned why cranes and machinery were idle, attempting to breach the cordoned-off area. Military, police, and rescue personnel stepped in to calm him and explained the situation.

The taxi driver recounted picking him up at around 5:30 am, noting the passenger's intent to visit the collapse site first despite a planned trip to Pattaya. The man was evidently intoxicated after consuming alcohol, becoming disruptive when they reached the site.

Authorities eventually brokered a deal requiring the foreigner to pay only 300 baht for the journey, which the driver contested, citing the initial 4,000 baht agreement given the five-hour trip.

After negotiations, the Hungarian apologised to officials, embracing them in gratitude. He chose not to accompany the police but instead travel with the taxi driver to sort out the fare at Bang Sue Police Station.

300 baht is way too little

4000 baht way too much

Five-hour trip is off by at least 3 hours, probably more, given that it was 5:30 am.

author never taken a trip from Pats to Swampy?

Yeah looking at him well dressed and a good haircut for a Pattaya visit, taxi driver must have been confused to h3ll

Something about this story just doesn't make sense, he was obviously overcharged for his taxi ride, but who's ever heard of a situation where the police have negotiated down a fare on behalf of a foreigner?

Is that the first time that's ever happened in Thai history, or is there something else going on here?

Clearly a confused person who needs a mental health check, which of course he won't get here...

Pattaya visitors are becoming increasingly weird...

In a related matter he embarrasses the authorities by pointing out the idle machinery.  He’s got a point. If you had a relative (not saying he did) and saw rescue crew standing idle you’d be pi$$ed off too.

Imagine doing manual work in that heat.

It's the Military police not the RTP that allegedly negotiated the price down. However, as stated in the article, he chose not to accompany the police (Military) but instead travel with the taxi driver to sort out the fare at Bang Sue Police Station run by the RTP.  My guess is he sobered up at bit and decided it was better to deal with the flexible RTP than the military police who could add a few  non-negotiable charges.

Green horn who doesn't know the usual fare price or the value of Thai money... Taxi drivers are happy to exploit this.

Must have been doing some real thinking on the plane over. Never the less, lets hope he slows down in Pattaya.

Eastern Europeans, including Ukrainians and Russians, should not be allowed to travel.

They should be behind some iron curtain queuing for bread.

There, I said it.

Is it really 5 hours from the airport to the Chinese building collapse?

I hope they have a padded cell at the cop shop, if not send the rubber truck, despatch to the asylum.
