A 44-year-old Myanmar national suffered a devastating workplace injury when his right hand was mangled in a coconut husk shredding machine at a processing site in Amphawa District, Samut Songkhram.

 

Emergency responders from the Sawang Benjatham Rescue Foundation were dispatched to the scene following reports of a worker’s hand being trapped in industrial machinery. The incident occurred at a private residence that had been converted into a coconut husk storage and processing facility, located in Village 7, Plai Phong Phang Subdistrict.

 

At the site, rescue workers discovered the victim, identified as Mr. Mutunthu, in excruciating pain with his right hand firmly lodged in the rotating mechanism of a coconut husk shredder. He was immediately administered oxygen to aid his breathing before responders used hydraulic cutting tools to disassemble parts of the machine.

 

It took approximately 20 minutes to free the worker’s hand, which had been severely mutilated. Medical staff confirmed that Mr. Mutunthu had suffered catastrophic injuries and would lose his right hand, rendering him permanently disabled. First aid was administered on-site before he was urgently transported to Somdet Phra Phutthaloetla Hospital for emergency treatment.

 

Preliminary investigations revealed that the incident occurred while Mr. Mutunthu was feeding coconut husks into the shredder. He reportedly attempted to push the husks deeper into the machine when his hand was inadvertently drawn into the rotating blades. Co-workers quickly shut off the machine and called emergency services.

 

The incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers of industrial machinery, especially in informal or makeshift work environments. Authorities are to investigate the safety protocols at the facility.
