Senior Monk Faces Dismissal After Row with Locals Over Rotten Eggs Dumped Near Home

A senior monk in the historic province of Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya is facing possible dismissal following a bizarre incident in which over 1,000 rotten eggs were allegedly dumped near a resident’s home amid an ongoing dispute.

 

The incident, which took place in the Pratu Chai subdistrict, has drawn widespread attention after local residents accused Phra Athikan Sucharoen, the abbot, of deliberately discarding the rotting eggs next to a private home. The alleged motive stems from a long-standing conflict over a garage structure built by the homeowner, which reportedly extended beyond the property line into temple grounds.

 

 

Officials from multiple agencies, including Phra Wachirophas, the district ecclesiastical head and abbot of Wat Sala Pun Worawihan; Ms. Sukanya Baonerd, Director of Fine Arts Office 3 Ayutthaya; and Ms. Sukanya Iamsittipornkul, Acting Director of the Department of Public Health, arrived at the site alongside officials from the Treasury Department to investigate the matter.

 

According to neighbours, the foul-smelling remains of the eggs appeared shortly after the dispute intensified. Witnesses claim the eggs were intentionally discarded by Phra Athikan Sucharoen as a form of retaliation against the homeowner.

 

When approached by officials, Phra Athikan Sucharoen reportedly responded with hostility, verbally confronting Phra Wachirophas and accusing him of accepting bribes from local residents to side against the temple. The altercation quickly drew attention, prompting officials to intervene and de-escalate tensions.

 

Following the confrontation, the homeowner agreed to dismantle the portion of the garage that encroached on temple land. However, the incident has left a sour impression among locals, many of whom have expressed frustration with what they describe as longstanding issues involving the abbot’s behaviour.

 

“The actions of Phra Athikan Sucharoen have repeatedly caused problems within the community,” said Phra Wachirophas. “We will be reviewing this matter seriously, and disciplinary measures , including his possible removal as abbot, are under consideration. The case will also be forwarded to the provincial monastic council for further review.”

So as the owner of the “illegal garage”  has said will remove the garage encroaching on temple land - the monk can leave whatever on the temple’s ground
