Moving to Phuket in June- Stray Dogs an Issue?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

We are moving to house in late June in the Rawai area with our three dogs from the USA. Do we have to worry about stray dogs attacking or bothering our dogs?

Thanks for any input.

I used to live in the Rawai area there were not that many strays where I lived.

But a neighbour had one of his three dogs attacked by an idiot walking his pit bull which he let off the leash.

The owner had a struggle to get the pit off his dog which subsequently died a month later from the injuries.

No. The problem are irresponsible people, local and foreigner alike. Some people will allow their animals to roam, and fortunately, most are not aggressive. There is always the potential for the  rogue animal.  Unfortunately,  Rawai , like much of Thailand has a speeding problem. Compounding it is that people do not slow for animals or people and regularly run over animals and  carry on. Thailand is also a country where the theft of animals is not unusual.  The people who do this are  veritable scum and will claim that the animal was wandering about and that they were only being nice, when the reality is that they are looking for something to sell to a dog butcher or a dog fighting ring.

The best thing that you can do is to fence your property to keep the animals in a safe space, and to not leave the animals unattended.  It's not just the theft risk. There are poisonous snakes and reptiles and stinging insects like centipedes and you need to be close to  keep an eye on the dogs.
