You've focused on the wrong opinion.  Patong2021's opinion/comment is more accurate.  Although the masks used are reported to not be any good against the PM2 air pollution, they do help to reduce the amount of dust and 'some' of that black smoke that comes from the 2 cycle motorcycle engines (and of course the diesel buses black smoke).  It has nothing to do with COVID19.

what the hell are you on about???

The vehicle fumes, dust, silica, insects and road debris that floats over the roads is pretty bad.  There are some days, when one has to wear the mask or else spend a few hours coughing and sneezing toxic dirt. This isn't about Covid, or some other  farang imagined  conspiracy. One wears a mask if one wants to breathe.

makes as much sense as riding with a phone in your hand and shielding  your eyes with the same hand

A helmet is much more uncomfortable, more difficult to carry and store than a face mask.  The benefits of a face mask are immediate and obvious each time you ride--you don't get so much dust and pollution in your lungs.   While a helmet only protects you from a very rare event.

I've worn bike helmets while riding various motorcycles and now scooters for 50 years, and they've never been uncomfortable. 45 people on average dying a day here plus likely hundreds more who hit their heads and suffer brain injuries or if they're lucky just a concussion or cuts isn't a rare event. Neither are the parents of a teenager going to his or her funeral a comfortable event.

If you get killed in a wreck,

you are re-born again.

No biggie.

But then they might come back as a person who makes comments like that.

Every helmet I've ever worn has been uncomfortable.  But I'm sure thats because I only drive a motorbike when I rent it while traveling, so the helmet is always a cheap crappy one.......the same kind Thais would try on and then dislike.

Can anyone explain the rationale behind such an action?

I’ve already seen it 4 times this morning on the roads..

I don’t get on bikes often, but when I do I know I am capable and will not crash, always riding safely and defensively. So a helmet is not necessary.

One think I can not avoid is the pollution so I always put on a mask for lung health.

It also saves me putting on sunblock.

you will crash at some point.

I read somewhere years ago that the common complaint about helmets in Thailand is it is too hot for them, whereas group think is the reason they keep masks on. Plus, smiling with a load of lies stuck in your teeth is poor form.

Once you get rolling it’s not bad.

A properly sized helmet is the key to comfort.

There are a lot of people coughing up crap now. I can understand if someone wants to wear a mask.

In any case, what's it to you? How's it hurting you?

Pollution - yes...

Everything else you mentioned.. No..  the face masks don't stop insects hitting your eyes, and a square over the mouth and nose doesn't really stop the sun on the rest of the face... Its not hard to understand.

Its horrible in the city though - some of those traffic lights take an age to change to green and we're stuck there in the humidity and heat of all the engines etc..    A modular flip up helps, nevertheless, the helmets are still so hot... BUT...  better hot in a helmet than an idiot without one.

Yep, sitting a long light when its hot, and feeling the heat of the motor is not fun.   Better safe then sorry .

Noooo.....  I wouldn't suggest that, no need for me to be offensive to your wife.

Though, are you ok with her not wearing a helmet ?...     And she needs eye protection too, getting a bee in the eye at 50kmh can bring someone off their bike.

Do you know my wife, well enough to comment on what she wears on the bike, for some reason you think you do

Its been a while since I've been to Soi Bintabat...  so unlikley.

... you brought your wife in to this through, no one else...  if you don't care if she wears a helmet or not thats on you...

... The same can be said for anyone...  an insect in the eye at 50kmh is going to cause problems, any rider with any sense will ensure they have eye protection and head protection - you seem to think its not so important.

Oh mate, what a lowlife you are, there was no need for such a comment, but I guess that's just the type of person you are...total irrelevant comment.

Where did I say she doesn't wear a helmet, in fact her helmet has a face shield...you are just a grub. Shame on you.

Sure thing champ....   You've attempted the play the morality card with your escalation and the 'how dare you mention my wife'  approach when you brought her into the conversation in the first place with your 'faux-outrage'...

Don't get too upset about it - she's smart enough to wear a helmet with a face shield so good on her.

Mate, I can't be bothered discussing this with a <deleted>...
