Sure, people over the age of 60 are considered "old", but it is still relatively young compared to the total US population.  Although the life expectancy of the US male is now approx. 77 1/2 years, if one manages to reach age 70, the life expectancy is age 83 and a bit.  So, yes, relatively, young for his age group.  He would have had another 12 years or more to go.  The life expectancy tables in the USA show that if  males manage to survive to an old age, they are likely to  die at an even older age than the norm.  If  the man had been age 81, he would have been expected to last until age 88+ years of age.
