With GDP screeching to a halt, exports drying up, visa regulations in constant flux, and a new FBA threatening a wide segment of the economy, I think you might have a problem finding any industry that is growing here, much less high growth.

They just revised the GDP growth upwards didn't they?

4-5% GDP Growth per year over the next 5 years is hardly "screaming to a halt", since it was only 5% in 2006.

Plenty of high growth industries here as witnessed by the 18% rise in exports (including 5% rise in Baht terms) over the last year.

i'm sure some industries are quite high while some are quite low and even negative (seems like manufacturing/export and tourism are biggies), so would like to know about it and if its in relation to my career would be even more useful.

Ben, you need to do some homework first and be a little careful with your reports. They are hoping for a 15% percent increase in exports this year in US dollar terms. Last year the baht was 40 to the dollar, this year its 33. When you have a 16% increase in currency, and 15% increase in exports, that means what. Do the math first Ben before posting.

Tourism is down as best we can tell. Consumer spending is way down as best we can tell. Exports are slowing but probably still expanding. You will be hard pressed to find a high growth industry in Thailand this year unless you are involved with NPL disposals, they are way up.

Maybe you should tell us something about your occupation instead of asking about the Thai economy.

My occupation is IT on the networking (Lan/WAN/Servers) side of things and I'm in Management. ZDNET Asia seems to report that Legal, Finance, Telecommunications, IT, and Web pay high salaries although that may not really mean they are high growth industries

some government agencies report that manufacting/export have been and still are the highest growth industries. would be great if there were a pie chart of 2006 growth and 2007 half year growth by industry or some info like that. any comments xbusman.....

Good topic, I am looking forward to Ben sharing the high growth industries with us. I would also like to know.

Retailers say no to Tesco

More than 100 small retailers in Kamphaeng Saen district of Nakhon Pathom yesterday blocked Malaiman road, which links the province with Suphan Buri, in a protest against the building of a Tesco Lotus hypermarket. The protest disrupted traffic for more than four hours. Thailand was just dubbed the fourth highest growing economy in Asia in a report by Deutsche Bank just on Friday.

India 5.5%

Malaysia 5.4%

China 5.2%

Thailand 4.5%

Average growth over 2006 - 2020

I'm not saying that all predictions are correct, but I'm sure Deutsche-Banks report is better than most, Thats pretty much where I would expect Thailand to sit myself.

Automobile industry and Biofuels would be where I think the next 20 years or so Thailand might be able to make (more of) an impact.

ok so based on Ben's post the 4.5% prediction in the years ahead...i wonder what the breakdown would be by industry...even a rough estimate would be great to satisfy my curiousity..... :o

Now Ben, you bust my chops based on a loose estimate of where the baht needs to be today to compete with China, and then throw a 14 year prediction by a banking analyst at us regarding GDP growth. Asia is a tumultuous happening place, with huge changes every day. Do you have any idea of what china looked like 14 years ago? I do, I was in China in 1992. While we had an idea of what could happen, what did happen was simply astonishing.

Predicting GDP growth is pretty darn difficult six months at a time. BOT has changed the prediction for this year about every month, and we have not seen the end of if yet I think.

Do some searches and help out with the high growth industries in Thailand. I will settle for anything over GDP growth rate this year of around 5%.
