A former deputy prosecutor has been arrested in Cambodia for allegedly taking a bribe to release five foreigners accused of running an online scam.

The Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) confirmed the arrest of Kry Seiha, who served at the Pursat Provincial Court, after investigators found evidence he accepted payment to release one Chinese man and four Vietnamese women detained in a raid on 16 July.

The suspects were apprehended in Thmar Da commune, Veal Veng district, during a crackdown on cybercrime operations, according to ACU spokesman Soy Vichetr.

“Police made the arrests, but instead of prosecuting them, he freed them,” Vichetr told Khmer Times. “This violates the law and undermines the authorities’ efforts to fight online fraud.”

Following the incident, the Ministry of Justice suspended Seiha on 16 July to allow for investigation. Justice Secretary of State Dyna Seng said the action was taken on the orders of Prime Minister Hun Manet after he was alerted to the misconduct.

Seiha remains in custody at ACU headquarters in Phnom Penh and will be referred to court once questioning is complete.
