Maxwell Makes Last-Ditch Supreme Court Appeal Over Epstein Deal

Ghislaine Maxwell is urging the U.S. Supreme Court to honour a non-prosecution agreement linked to Jeffrey Epstein, arguing it protects her from her 2021 sex trafficking conviction. The lawyers contend that the government has a duty to honour the deal with Epstein, asserting it should extend beyond Florida, where it was originally established. Federal prosecutors maintain the agreement was solely valid in Florida and not binding in New York, where Maxwell was tried.

In the appeal, Maxwell’s attorneys argue the agreement’s terms were universal and not limited geographically to Florida. They emphasise the absence of conditions regarding co-conspirators being known to the government at the time or dependent on any government attorney’s understanding. "This should be the end of the discussion," the brief insists, suggesting the terms should unequivocally ensure her immunity.

Meanwhile, the Justice Department urges the Supreme Court to dismiss Maxwell’s petition. Despite Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche's recent meeting with Maxwell, the prosecutors assert her inability to enforce the non-prosecution agreement since she wasn’t a signatory. However, her defence disputes this, highlighting her alleged status as Epstein’s co-conspirator as central to her prosecution.

Maxwell’s attorneys stress that the U.S. government's failure to uphold its promises would undermine trust in the legal system. They argue the agreement should prevent prosecution across different jurisdictions, without exceptions. David Oscar Markus, Maxwell’s attorney, draws parallels with President Trump's reputation for valuing deals, stating, “When the United States gives its word, it must stand by it.”

The case spotlights the broader implications of non-prosecution agreements and their territorial limitations within federal law. While the debate intensifies, the Supreme Court has yet to decide whether to hear her appeal, leaving the outcome in uncertainty.

The legal battle continues, underscoring the complexity and high stakes involved. The implications of the Supreme Court's decision could have a significant impact on similar legal agreements nationwide. Maxwell remains hopeful that this appeal might lead to overturning her conviction, but for now, the court’s ruling is awaited with bated breath.

No doubt SCOTUS will do Trump's bidding.

I'm not sure that the appeal is terribly relevant or connected with her meetings with the #2 at the Justice Department, who is effectively here acting as the Presidents fixer. The appeal has been in the system for quite some time, the meetings however are more likely along the lines of "say what we want and we will let you go", with quite possibly a side dish of "or else"!

So "Trump's bidding" through the DOJ is to dismiss the petition but you want the defence argument upheld?
