UNESCO has pledged technical support to help Cambodia protect its cultural heritage sites, following a series of armed clashes near the Thai border that may have caused damage to historic landmarks.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the UN cultural agency said it is ready to assist both Cambodia and Thailand in assessing potential damage to cultural sites and implementing urgent preservation measures. This includes safeguarding locations listed as UNESCO World Heritage, such as the Preah Vihear Temple—long a flashpoint in cross-border tensions.

“UNESCO stands ready to provide the necessary technical assistance… to ensure the protection of the sites,” the organisation said, adding that satellite monitoring had already revealed signs of possible impact on several areas.

Fighting earlier this month raised international concern over the safety of shared cultural assets. In response, UNESCO has provided both governments with the exact coordinates of protected sites and urged them to respect international law. It reiterated the importance of commitments under the 1954 Hague Convention and the 1972 World Heritage Convention, which bind signatories to shield cultural property during armed conflict.

"Peace is an essential condition for the protection of cultural heritage," the statement read, applauding the recent ceasefire agreement and calling on both sides to take all necessary precautions to prevent further harm.

Cambodia’s ancient temples and monuments, many of them near the contested border, are not only symbols of national identity but also vital to the country’s economy and tourism industry.

UNESCO’s intervention comes at a critical time as both countries face mounting pressure to de-escalate and preserve their shared cultural legacy.
