In a startling incident in Nakhon Pathom, a Thai woman drove her SUV over a man sitting at the entrance of Phra Pathom Chedi on Monday, July 28. The victim, an elderly man believed to be homeless, suffered severe injuries and was taken to hospital, sparking widespread outrage as the event was captured on CCTV and shared across Thai social media.

The shocking footage shows the SUV entering the temple gate and immediately running over the man, dragging him several metres. The driver, a frequent visitor to the temple, parked the car, exited, and requested a monk to check on the injured man before she left the scene with her belongings.

The incident unfolded around 7 am and was reported by ThaiRath. Temple workers quickly called emergency services, resulting in the victim being rushed to Nakhon Pathom Hospital. His injuries include a broken back, and he is slated for surgery today, July 31. The hospital confirmed that despite his financial difficulties, he is receiving the necessary medical attention. Further examination revealed that he also suffers from heart disease.

A local food vendor, a 25-year-old man, identified the victim as a homeless individual, approximately 60 years old, who had been staying at the temple grounds. He condemned the driver’s actions, criticising her failure to stop and offer assistance immediately.

The female driver continued to another province, Ratchaburi, with friends after the incident, reportedly to make merit—a customary Buddhist practice. Media outlets speculated that she might have failed to notice the man due to his position on the ground, but the public remains largely unsympathetic.

In response, police have impounded the woman's car, which was left at the temple, though they have not disclosed when questioning will occur.

As the victim’s family travels from Phitsanulok to be by his side, the local community and online commentators have been vocal about the need for accountability and compassion. The incident raises concerns about road safety and the moral responsibilities of drivers, particularly in such sacred and public spaces.

The case continues to unfold, with authorities and social media users keenly watching the outcome. The story highlights ongoing issues of traffic awareness and the treatment of vulnerable populations in Thailand. Police are under pressure to act promptly, and an investigation is underway to ensure justice is served.

Why does the bloke in white watch what happened and keep walking on?

Why doesn't the good Buddhist walking out of the temple not ask the bloke in white what happened?
